This section is for translators to ask any clarification questions, raise issues that need addressing in the MusicBee application, etc
Anyone interested to volunteer or assist someone already started on a file please send me a PM.
Steven

any (.lng, .lngc) language files placed in the Localisations folder where musicbee is installed will be included in the language selection box on the main preferences page. You will need to restart musicbee after selecting a language

combine the following files, and save as XXXX.lng. When you are complete send the .lng file to me (Steven) and i will generate a .lngc binary file which is included in the official MusicBee releases:

Steven, Russian translation is almost completed, but I have a few questions. It's impossible to translate one word or short phrase without knowledge of context. Sometimes I cannot find strings of Google translated Russian .lng file in the MB interface, or I'm not sure if I properly found them. In most cases it is sufficient for me that you expand short phrase to full English sentence with object, verb, subject and important adjectives. The most important for Russian language is the object (thing or person who performs an action). Form of verb and subject is heavily depends on it. In rare cases I need to understand the full context of sentence. Can you give me a very short description of context or give me instructions how to cause MB to display these strings in these cases? I wrote a remarks in italic text below strings from .lng file that should clarify what I need exactly.

I think your comments may be useful for other translators too.

Need to know the context. What are {0}, {1}? Expecting an answer like 'file' or 'track title'  or 'artist' or 'number of files' or 'various tags' (the last is worst case. I should make some tricks in this situation like writing strings in English applications similar to 'file(s)' ).

!Main.msg.RtCtzft# Reset the {0} Count to zero for the {1}?
What are {0}, {1}? I suggest that {0} are the two predefined strings but cant find them in .lng file.  And please confirm that these two strings are not used by MB elsewhere.

!Tfr.msg.Syfa# Synchronisation failed
!Tfr.msg.SyFa# Synchronisation Failed
Are these strings the same and can I remove one of them from .lng file?

------------------------------------------

Steven, the last question
What do mean spaces and column in this string?:

!Main.msg.abefopv# aaaaaaaa bcccdddd eeeeeeeeeeee ffgghhhhhhiiiiiiijkllll:mmnnnnnnn oooooooo ppqrrrrrrsssssstttttttttuuu vwwxyyz

Do MB somehow normalize frequencies of chars? That is are the strings 'aa ... z' and 'aaaa ... zz' the same or not in the above line?

------------------------------------------

Steven, one small note
I noticed that in this string:

!sRpl.ctl.1F77F7BA# The following changes will be made - Click the 'Replace' button to commit the changes

button is named 'Replace' although the actual button label is 'Apply changes'. Of course I wrote the same label in both places in Russian translation, but you may want to correct this in MB internal string.

------------------------------------------

2 all: What is the difference between 'Artist' and 'Performer'. I haven't found this tag in Russian versions of WMP and iTunes and all translations that I've found in various dictionaries are the same for both words (I speak about translations that is applicable to music) - something close to English word 'performer'. I cant change translation of 'artist' - this is an established term in Russian. So I need to play around with translation of 'performer'. May be there are some synonyms in English?

i'll answer some of this now and the rest another time
!Main.menu.RaAl#   Rating Album
the overall star rating for an album (as opposed to the rating for individual tracks in the album)

!Main.help.Bookmark#   Bookmark
its displayed as a tooltip: when viewing a web page there is a bookmark icon that when clicked saves the link as a bookmark

!Main.menu.NoDo#   Not Docked
in the mini-player Window Settings menu, you can dock it to the Top of the screen, the bottom or not docked which is the default
!Main.menu.Top#      Top
see above
!Main.menu.Bottom#   Bottom
see above

!Main.status.Failed#   Failed
means a download failed

!Main.btn.Next#      Next
its actually for the file organiser when adding exceptions and is a button label. When clicked it goes to the next screen

!Radio.msg.listeners#   listeners
the number of people listening to a station

!Sys.ctl.BCC52548#   same folder and name as the music file
for the mini-lyrics plugin settings - specifies how lyrics are named - in this case it specifies the lyrics file is saved in the same folder and has the same name as the music file

!Sys.ctl.D6F99DA9#   specific folder:
for the mini-lyrics plugin settings - specifies the lyrics are located in a specific folder

!Org.msg.nolo#      not located
file organiser status - indicates a file does not exist
!Org.msg.nod#      not on drive {0}
file organiser status - indicates a file is not on the same drive as the one being organised "not on drive C:"
!Org.msg.duplicate#   duplicate
file organiser status - indicates the file will be renamed and clash with another file name
!Org.msg.noch#      no change
file organiser status - the file will not be reorganised as the filename will not change
!Org.msg.<nch#      <no change>
as above

!Tag.ctl.tral#      track/ album:
displayed next to the track rating/album rating - very little room here so it assumes you know its a rating because a rating control is displayed

!tTag.msg.disambiguat#   disambiguation
when multiple artists match an auto-tag search criteria, this column shows a unique name for the artist

!Cvt.msg.nolo#      not located
file converter status - indicates a file does not exist
!Cvt.msg.noonco#   not on computer
file converter status - indicates a file is not residing on the computer eg. on a portable device
!Cvt.msg.rB(QsiPP#   requires BASS_AAC.dll (see 'use QuickTime' setting in Player Preferences)
the file cannot be converted (eg. an M4A file) because you dont have BASS_AAC.dll

-----
What do mean spaces and column in this string?:
!Main.msg.abefopv#   aaaaaaaa bcccdddd eeeeeeeeeeee ffgghhhhhhiiiiiiijkllll:mmnnnnnnn oooooooo ppqrrrrrrsssssstttttttttuuu vwwxyyz

its used as a base for setting the width of dialogs with different font sizes. If russian words are generally wider than english you can add some extra chars on the end to make MB dialogs generally wider eg.
#Main.msg.abefopv#   aaaaaaaa bcccdddd eeeeeeeeeeee ffgghhhhhhiiiiiiijkllll:mmnnnnnnn oooooooo ppqrrrrrrsssssstttttttttuuu vwwxyyzxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks, Steven. You do a great job.

----------------------------------------

Steven, I need to ask again about something:

Sometimes in MB two or more strings actually represent a single sentence, for instance, something like: 'Save file to' and as a one of the options 'library' - that is 'Save file to library'. Such strings may be even not located next to each other in dialog, but they are the single sentence. Please confirm that strings below are completed sentences and not used in conjunction with other strings or give me full sentences.
!Sys.ctl.BCC52548#   same folder and name as the music file
!Sys.ctl.D6F99DA9#   specific folder:

!tTag.msg.disambiguat#   disambiguation
Is it a column header? And it would be great if you can give instructions how to view this in MB.

----------------------------------------

Houston, we have a problem!

1. The tag manager filter pane (and only filter pane) is always displayed in English although all localized strings are at their places in .lng file.

2. In 'picture type' dropdown list of artwork tab of tag editor there are only English strings (e.g. 'album cover', 'album cover (back)', etc). I didn't find them in .lng file.

3. For 'Windows Theme' in View/Skins menu there is no localization string too.

4. Auto-tag by Album window. Button 'Cancel' always is displayed in English.

5. For 'Custom #' tags there are no localization strings.

6. File organizer window. When adding first exception the string 'exception file naming template' is not displayed. It is displayed only when I add second exception.

7. Multiple artist splitter - opened from the tag editor artist "..." button. Window header is "Multiple <translated word 'artist'> splitter". I expected that it is taken from line #aSplit.msg.MuArSp#.

'display artist' text is "display <translated word 'artist'>'".

'artists' text is "<translated word 'artist'>s". I think it should be "<translated word 'artist'>" (not "<translated word 'artists'>").

The same for multiple composers splitter (but genres splitter is fine).

its a column header - its not easy to test as it requires choosing an artist where multiple artists have part of the same name. In the tag editor enter the artist name as "Smith" and click auto-tag (make sure analyse digital sound signature in that drop-down is not enabled). It should display then

Yes, see it. Well, it was really hard to guess that 'disambiguation' is actually 'comments' :)

--------------------------------

Small issue. String #Main.msg.Utsfl-aotn# 'Unable to search for lyrics - artist or track name is not known' (and I guess all service strings in lyrics pane) don't wrap so actually I can see only 'Unable to search for lyrics - artist' (I have lyrics pane docked on the right side).

--------------------------------

Still have a problem

1. In tag manager filter pane the following is always displayed in English: word 'filter' (in upper left corner), string 'are missing' (at the right of pane), strings 'No dead links', 'No files were added today', etc (in track list), filter button labels 'Files Added Today', ''Files Added in Last Week'', etc (although in menu these strings are displayed translated), all undefined custom tags are displayed in English in list of tags (opened from selected tags button).

5. 'Custom #' tags are always displayed in English.

7. For multiple composers splitter window header is <translated 'multiple artist splitter'> and string <translated 'displayed artist'> instead of <translated 'displayed composer'> is shown.

8. All text in status bar always is shown in English.

9. 'Analise Volume' and 'Restore Original Volume' windows are not localized at all except for two button labels 'Proceed' and 'Close'

1 -
In tag manager filter pane the following is always displayed in English: word 'filter' (in upper left corner)
ok for me, - check you are changing #TM.msg.filter:#

string 'are missing' (at the right of pane), strings 'No dead links', 'No files were added today', etc (in track list),
ok for me - check #TM.msg.armi#. for the status bar text, see 8

filter button labels 'Files Added Today', ''Files Added in Last Week'', etc (although in menu these strings are displayed translated)
not sure what you mean - its translated in the tag manager menu and when i select it stays translated

all undefined custom tags are displayed in English in list of tags (opened from selected tags button)
- thats because they already have values assigned from the Preferences screen (which for you would have defaulted in english)

5 - this should fix
http://www.mediafire.com/?y6xjhgvq3t8xcii

7 - add: (replace spaces with one tab)
#aSplit.msg.MuCoSp#   Multiple Composer Splitter
replace:
#aSplit.msg.diar#   display {0}:

8 - thats no so easy to solve as the text is dynamically constructed with numbers and plural versions of text. I will look at it though

9 - can you reconfirm - it works ok for me on the test german file. Perhaps you edited the english text line starting with the !

this is a file will all the new items in the english translation file (anyone else reading this, i will post this to the other topics in a day or two in case any more missing items are found)

EDITED

9 - can you reconfirm - it works ok for me on the test german file. Perhaps you edited the english text line starting with the !
Steven, sorry. It seems that I just didn't update .lng file used by MB. MB can't use .lng file opened in Word so I have 2 copies of file.

--------------------

all undefined custom tags are displayed in English in list of tags (opened from selected tags button)
- thats because they already have values assigned from the Preferences screen (which for you would have defaulted in english)

You are quite right. An issue: custom tags 5-9 aren't displayed in preferences (because I never defined them), but are shown as untranslated 'Custom#' in all tag lists. The same about Virtual# tags.

Actually this is not a translation issue. I suppose that MB should not display undefined custom and virtual tags at all except for in Preferences Window.

--------------------

Look at 'Renumber tracks' window. After field with number of leading zeros words 'e.g.' and 'etc.' doesn't have translation strings. Don't know about other languages, but I cant see situation where 'etc.' cannot be included in string 'leading zeros'.

--------------------

Feature request (actually not feature request, but proposition). It may be useful to add hotkey 'switch to English' (this hotkey must be non-redefinable). May be a first level nonlocalized menu item 'switch to English, for example in 'File' menu'. I several times succeeded to change language of interface of some programs to completely unknown language and it was very tricky to change language to English or Russian after that.

Some new issues I've found and more questions:

See Artwork layout, right click on the main panel header bar/ Group by/ <untranslated Album>, <untranslated Artist>, <untranslated Composer>. If you choose group by album, text <untranslated ‘albums by’ translated ‘album artist’> is shown in panel header.

---------------------------------

!Main.menu.PMotSN#   Play More of the Same Now
right click/ Play More/ ....
its when no files are selected eg. right click on a blank part of the main panel, this option will be disabled and is really just a default

Can't see this. If I right click on blank part of the mail panel, no submenu can be opened (and this is right behaviour). Russian translation needs subject after word ‘Same’, i.e. something like ‘Play more of the same artist now’. But I think its very unimportant issue and I’m pleased that MB doesn’t show this string at all for now.

---------------------------------

!Main.menu.Folder...#   Folder...
when downloading files, right click/ Download To/ Folder...
on clicking you can select a folder to download to

Can’t find this. If I right click on a link in internal MB browser I see ‘Download’ only (can’t understand where file is downloaded to). But context is clear. Only one question: what items may be shown next to ‘Folder…’ in ‘Download to’ submenu (I need to check translation of these strings)?

---------------------------------

!Main.menu.PlDo#   Playlist Dock
right click on the now playing panel/ Configure Layout/ Playlist Dock

Can’t find this. I see ‘Now Playing List’ submenu instead.

See Artwork layout, right click on the main panel header bar/ Group by/ <untranslated Album>, <untranslated Artist>, <untranslated Composer>. If you choose group by album, text <untranslated ‘albums by’ translated ‘album artist’> is shown in panel header.
i have the same and will fix that

!Main.menu.Folder...#   Folder...
when downloading files, right click/ Download To/ Folder...
on clicking you can select a folder to download to

Can’t find this. If I right click on a link in internal MB browser I see ‘Download’ only (can’t understand where file is downloaded to). But context is clear. Only one question: what items may be shown next to ‘Folder…’ in ‘Download to’ submenu (I need to check translation of these strings)?
on clicking the Folder... (which is a context menu item), it will open the standard windows "Open Folder" dialog

!Main.menu.PlDo#   Playlist Dock
right click on the now playing panel/ Configure Layout/ Playlist Dock

Can’t find this. I see ‘Now Playing List’ submenu instead.
you are right - its actually when you have the Now Playing List docked in the main panel and you right click on header bar (but the idea and the sub-menus are the same as the Now Playing List menu

Yes, I guessed. But the question remains: what items may be shown next to ‘Folder…’ item in ‘Download to’ submenu (I need to check translation of these strings)?

-----------------------------------

Some new issues:

10. Analise volume window: status text ‘Calculating volume’ and ‘Removing volume’, column headers 'name' and 'status' are not localized

11. 'Find more/ Find genre in library' is not localized

12. Right-click on track/ Queue last is not localized

13. Genre Categories Editor in Preferences is not localized

14. Please give me string ids that is used as substitutions in strings !Main.menu.PN#, !Main.menu.QN#,  !Main.menu.QL.3# and confirm that these strings (which is substituted in strings like "Play {0} '{1}' Now" instead of {0}) are not used by MB elsewhere (there will be non-initial form or these words in Russian so simply using tag names is not suitable).

15. The following in status bar is not localized: word 'selected:', # mins, # MB #, GB, # hours, # days (maybe # KB - I don't have so small files in library).

16. '#' column in all playlists should be localized too.

17. 'Restrict File Types' window is not localized.

18. In Preferences/Player/sound device: 'Default' device is not localized.

19. Names of standard auto-playlists are not localized. I suppose that these names are actually filenames. Not sure what to do with them. May be MB must replace some predefined filenames with translated ones for display purposes. Or may be modification of auto-playlist format is required, something like: <SmartPlaylist KeepLive="True" SaveStaticCopy="False" Layout="4" MinimumArtistGap="0" NameId="#Main.ap.1#"> that allows to point translated string id that should be used as playlist name. If string id is missing in this tag then filename should be used as playlist name.

20. About new strings introduced in recent 'new.txt'. Found strings like:

#Main.msg.Files0#   No files
#Main.msg.Files1#   1 file
#Main.msg.Files9#   {0} files

I quickly translated these strings and immediately found an issue. In general I need 6 forms of each string for correct translation, but if consider only text that I actually met using MB than 2 forms are sufficient (#Main.msg.Something.of# and #Main.msg.Something.sf#):

First form corresponds to full English sentence '# files are displayed' (word 'files' is object).
Second form corresponds to full English sentence 'Something must be done for # files' (word 'files' is subject).

I suppose even that there is no need to have exactly 2 forms for each such string. Sometimes MB actually use only one form of string, but I must be sure about this.

21. Album auto-tagger: album type ('Album Official', etc.) is not localized.

22. Auto-shutdown window: symbol '@' must be either localizable or just removed.

23. Preferences/Player/resample to: could be the list of values '48K,96K, 192K ' localizable?

it must be set by the BASS library. I'm not comfortable changing it as i suspect it would need a fair bit of testing to check for any unintended side-effects

19:i'll leave this one for now

its not clear to me what you want me to do with this. Can you do some sort of compromise translation?
eg. instead of
delete the {0}? eg .delete the 10 selected files?
{0} - delete?
10 selected files - delete?

21:
thats whats returned by the web-service - i'm not comfortable having it translated as the web-site in question could change it

About 20:

(I'm speaking below only about text which is composed from substrings and parameters like filenames, tag values, numbers, etc. In case of static text its only translator's problem how to translate text)

Suppose you implement new functionality and introduce new string '#some1# items'. There are 3 possible situations concerning translations:

1. The string #some1# (i.e. not the value of string, but string with id #some1#) is used only ones in UI. Its perfect situation for translation because translator have full control over every word in text. Cant see any issues. But .lng can become very large and can slowdown MB and translation process can take a longer time.

2. The string #some1# is intended to be used only in texts with the same grammar in English: '# items selected', '# items displayed', '# items deleted', etc. Its slightly dangerous situation because texts which have the same grammar in English can have different grammar in other languages. But in most cases its unimportant.

3. The string #some1# is intended to be used in text with various grammar in English (i.e. '# items are selected' or 'Something must be done for # items' or another form). Depending on actual role of word 'items' in the sentence it may be required to have very many forms of string '#some1#'. For Russian its always sufficient to have 6 forms. For Estonian as far as I know its always sufficient to have 13 forms of this string. But if you don't intend to learn foreign language you cant see the difference between forms of words in various languages. So I don't request for 6 forms of each substituted string. But I think you can provide 2 forms of string in this situation (I guess that its sufficient for all cases considering variations of translation, but I can't limit myself to only 1 form) that have different meaning in English (although not different writing) - object and subject form.

its not clear to me what you want me to do with this. Can you do some sort of compromise translation?
eg. instead of
delete the {0}? eg .delete the 10 selected files?
{0} - delete?
10 selected files - delete?

Doing compromise translation is the only way to translate UI. All in all UI is not a poem. But having too many compromises is not a very good idea. You can't do very much with this, but its what you can:

1. You can write some comments about string context (like in the 'new.txt').

2. You can ensure translators that you distinguish situations 1, 2, 3.

3. And for:
situation 1 - just ignore any issues. Its all up to translator.
situation 2 - just be careful to not mess object and subject forms.
situation 3 - you can provide 2 forms of each string.

4. You can use predefined well-known suffixes ig.:
#some1.u1# - substring used only once in UI (or more then once, but in exactly the same text).
#some1.sg# - substring used only in text with the same grammar in English.
#some1.of# - substring used only as object in text.
#some1.sf# - substring used only as subject in text.

At this moment I'm not expecting something special about all this from you. As far as I tested my translation no issues exist. But my text above may be useful for future functionality and other translations.

You asked in http://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?topic=217.msg17274#msg17274 about any catches. At that moment I didn't have experience with translation of apps so I couldn't give you any tips. Now that's what I've found out:

1. In most cases its very good solution to use full displayed string with parameters like '{0} file is to be deleted' (and this is the common case for MB and its good) than composing final string from several substrings located at unpredictable places of .lng file. In this case translator can see the full displayed string immediately and can be sure that parts of full string is not used by MB elsewhere.

2. Look at auto-playlist, radio-playlist, custom search editors. They use the same parameter words in English (i.e. 'is', 'is not', 'less than', etc.) although the full text displayed by MB is the same in English and must be the same in other languages. So using different strings with same values for each editor is not required. But its not the problem. The problem is that each editor is using such words twice: in text 'use all/any...' and 'limit to...'.  My first intuitive translation led to inconsistent translation of strings 'is', 'less than' with respect to both places. Fortunately I could make translation of text of dialog that requires the same forms of parameter words in Russian. But its not common and may not be appropriate for other languages.

3. It may be good solution to use named parameters instead of numbered ones like "Play {name_of_tag} '{value_of_tag}' Now"

------------------------------------------------

Some more issues:

24. Library Filter Manager is not localized.

25. File Organizer window: when no exeptions are added yet please move 'Add exeption' button just below text ‘expept when’ (add one exeption or look at radio-playlist editor to see the requested placement (existing placement limits length of string to the left for senseless reason and looks distractive))

26. Preferences/Tags(2)/Lyrics providers window: text ‘enable and order the priority…’ is not localized

27. Preferences/Tags(2)/Artwork providers window: text ‘enable and order the priority…’ is not localized

28. Preferences/Tags(2)/Tags providers window: text ‘enable and order the priority…’ is not localized

29. Preferences/Tags(2)/don’t retreive artworks less than: need localizable text after size field which means ‘pixels’.

30. Preferences/CD-ripping/profile: Profile names are not localized (unlike all other places)

31. Device panel (just click on device in navigator panel)/line with text ’capacity: # GB                  available: # GB (#% of capacity )’: words ‘GB’, ‘MB’, etc., phrase ‘of capacity’ and words ‘N/A’ and ‘Unlnown’ in other fields are not localized.

32. Auto-shutdown window: need localizable text which means ‘minutes’ after input field with number of minutes.

33. Its very, very poor that when MB encounter empty string (i.e. ‘#something#<tab><CR>’) in .lng file it simply stops parsing .lng file without any error or warning messages. :) I spent 1 hour this morning trying to understand why MB only partially localized while all was perfect yesterday (1 string should be empty for Russian translation). Please warn other translators about this.

34. Prefs/Devices/on-the-fly converson/codec profile: Profile names are not localized (unlike all other places).

35. Please make radio-playlist window title to display playlist name like auto-paylists.

36. Note: It maybe useful to allow to edit saved customizable searches.

37. Didn’t find string for ‘Compact player’ like string #Sys.ctl.6EBE6649# for ‘mini-player’

38. Prefs/Hotkeys: Action, Hotkey, Global column headers is not localized.

39. Small issue: it would be good to use localized list separator in status bar (‘selected: # files, # mins…’) from Windows settings.

40. File organizer: tooltip 'File naming presets are previous folders… ' is not localized.

*** Is string !aNum.ctl.5D675CD# actually used by MB? Not an issue, but I want to remove it if its not used (and never will be used).

------------------------------------------------

I hope that no unknown issues remained. At least for Russian translation. Still waiting answers about some strings...
