If I turn on the A-Z Jump Bar in preferences

MB should automatically create a button here

and the button should stay there until I turn it off in preferences, not disappear when I close the Jump Bar.

I know a command button can already be defined for this, but I think it should be automatic from the preferences and the small button takes up less space on the header bar.

Now for your opinions........

Why not just click the track layout button next to the address bar and toggle the A-Z bar on/off from there?  I know its 2 clicks not one but much simpler...

And I can right click on any column header and bring it up that way too :)

Hmmm.... So maybe my wish should not be about doing something with the option on the Preferences>>Layout menu but removing that option from the screen, since we already have 3 (at least?) other ways to bring the Jump bar up  ???

I would argue there are lots of preferences that aren't really preferences, mostly those for toggling UI elements which as you mentioned can already be enabled via other means.
Bee excellent to each other...
