Getting a "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" error on a few tracks.

Hey everyone,

The first time I got the Data error (cyclic redundancy check) was when I was trying to change the Grouping for an album, and lately I've been noticing some playback issues with my library (songs constantly stopping and starting, or stopping and then just skipping to the next track in the playlist). It was all working fine up until the other day, so I'm now rescanning my library and so far it's throwing up a bunch of errors;

i suggest googling "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" for the appropriate action. It sounds like your disc drive has a serious issue

Yes, classic symptom of bad sectors developed/developing on the drive. Absolutely nothing to do with MusicBee.

If this is on a partition other than your boot partition, and it sounds like it is due to the drive letter being "F:,"  open a command window with Administrative rights on your C: drive, and at the prompt run "chkdsk f: /r" ;  this will scan drive (partition) F: first for user files, and if it finds a file in bad sectors will attempt to move that file out of them, and then mark those sectors as "bad" so nothing get written there in the future.  After that operation, it will scan the clusters in all the unused area of the drive and mark "bad" any of those it finds cannot be written to.

There are no guarantees that any files moved by chkdsk will be undamaged, but in my experience they did survive.

Following this operation, which may take hours depending on the size of the drive,  make a complete backup of all your files to another drive, and then install a new replacement drive at your earliest convenience.  Normally once a drive starts to "go," it will continue to do so.  I just came off this exact experience with a drive that was 10 years old (can't complain!) but I already had made backups elsewhere of all its contents so it wasn't too traumatic.  The CRC errors started showing up during file copy operations and extracting *.rar's that had been created with CRC checks.

BTW, using only the /f switch, "fixes errors on the drive," will do nothing on its own for bad sectors and even report the drive was "..without errors."  Only the /r switch will actually get that job done.
