I know you can ignore words when sorting by Artist, Album or Title

But what about ignoring for Grouping?
I like to organize similar artists by Grouping, then by Album Artist and then Artist.  Here's an example:

Unfortunately, in Grouping, I cannot figure out a way to ignore "the, a".  For a while I worked around it by just changing the grouping to "Beatles, The" but that was rather goofy looking.   Any other way to do this?  Or should this be a feature request?

create a virtual tag using this formula:
$Sort(<Grouping>)
and use that virtual tag for the display field

Thanks for the fast response!  I got super excited but that doesn't seem to do the trick.  It ends up looking the same as what my original workaround was (to just list them as Artist, The).

There are additional problems if you have more than one grouping (it only sorts 'The' if it's the first item listed in Grouping).  I actually ended up with Beatles, The and The Beatles as options.  When I flip-flopped the order of the Grouping for George Harrison in my example, I actually ended up with THREE (Beatles, The / The Beatles / Beatles).

I don't think there is any way to set the Grouping field to respect the 'ignore words' setting. The only fields that do this are Title, Album, Artist, Album Artist and Composer.
If you don't use, and won't use in the future, the Composer field, you could probably use this to do what you want here (instead of using the Grouping field).

I think your only other option is to set the Grouping field to be how you would like it sorted (i.e. 'Beatles' instead of 'The Beatles') and you have already dabbled with this idea.

You could post a wishlist request but this seems something of a niche use case - at least it does to me, but then you never know....

Yeah, I don't want to submit a request the more I think about it.  It would probably be for my edification only.

Composer field sounds interesting.  I would never use that field otherwise.  Is it possible to use a virtual tag to 'rename' it to something more meaningful (to me) in the column browser?  That would be a home run.

You don't need a virtual tag to do this, you can re-label any field:
Edit Preferences > Tags (2) > Configure Fields (Button)
Here you can set an 'override label' for any field.

Just for record purposes: there's already an existing request for this.

I already spend hours on end on social media. Might as well spare a few of those to a greater purpose here.

Wow.  This is fantastic and does exactly what I needed.  Thanks so much.  I have/had no plans for Composer field.

I've been using this for software for over 10 years and continue to be amazed at how little I understand about it.
