Lately I've started using the Sleep mode on Windows 10 (21H2). I always pause MB some time before Windows goes to sleep.

When I wake Windows up, MB sometimes starts playing by itself.

How can I stop MB from doing so?

Thanks so much!

Try stopping instead of pausing. If that doesn't work, shut MB down and restart it when you wake up Windows.
Download the latest MusicBee v3.5 or 3.6 patch from here.
Unzip into your MusicBee directory and overwrite existing files.

To try stopping is a good idea, thanks! But it still starts playing on its own when I wake up Windows.

Shutting down MB before Windows sleeps and then starting it after waking it works of course.

To my thinking, when Windows wakes, it should continue as it was when it went to sleep. Apps shouldn't start running if they weren't running when Windows went to sleep.

Anyway, it's a first-world problem.  :)

Thanks very much for your help, phred.

Just some thought, do you have set: 'load entire file into memory'?
Or perhaps a very large buffer size?
If you have, could you try disable that?
