First of all, sorry if I failed in finding an answer for this on the forum, I couldn't think of more ways to look for it.

The issue is that I want to add one artist to multiple tracks where the artists are different. I want to keep what's there and add one. If I do it the usual way, selecting all the songs and editing the multi-artist field, the previous artists get deleted.

I'm sure there's a way, but I can't think of one.

Thank you!

You can do that using the Tag Inspector.
(add an artist using the '+' icon on the right)

This is also possible on the regular "Edit" screen by clicking the three dots to the right of "Artist" to bring up the Multiple Artist Splitter.  You can add the artist through fields and drop-downs or show it in plain text and add it that way.

In cases where the artists differ between tracks, only the tag inspector will add a value without changing the others
