I have encountered a problem - not one of my music files on a nearly full 1tb hard drive will play with MusicBee: ape, flac, wav, mp4, etc.

Always the same message: "unable to play this file -  it has an unsupported format or is corrupted".

But when I load all the files in either VLC or MonkeyMedia (my previous preferred music player) they play without a problem.

Then uninstalled MusicBee.  And then reinstalled MusicBee and subsequently all my files - still have same problem: "unable to play this file -  it has an unsupported format or is corrupted"!!!

Anyone able to help a "non-technical" guy? Or do I have to start a new question/subject in this forum?

Using “Windows 10”.

Quick search didn't seem to find anyone with similar issues.

Would dearly like to get MusicBee working again - it was the best, until now.

Also just gave a donation (no thanks forthcoming though!).

Thanking you in anticipation.

Cheers,

Douglas (UK)

So, your files were previously playable under MusicBee, right?

If so, what has changed on your system since then?

Windows update?
MusicBee update? If so, where from?
Any strange behaviour with your HDD? Access rights changes?
Firewall changes?

I'm going to guess that Steven refunded your donation because you are obviously unhappy with MusicBee, and he's a decent chap who doesn't want to take donations from people who aren't satisfied.

Hi CP,

No Windows 10 update as far as I know.

I reloaded MB from Windows store (after encountering the problems) just this evening, but problem started yesterday prior to this.

HD is working perfectly with VLC and MediaMonkey - no problems with the HD as far as I know.

No Firewall issues as far as I know.

Did change my virus etc security from Windows Defender to Avast free yesterday - so perhaps if I go back to Windows Defender - and MB still doesn't work, we can eliminate that change.

But I cannot rationalise why my music files work and are recognised and play perfectly with VLC and MM and not with MB????

Thanking for you assistance.

Cheers.

Almost certainly, <Bingo!>  Avast is legendary in interfering with MusicBee.  You will need to whitelist every MusicBee folder, for file and any "network protection" modules of Avast.  Also I would personally recommend getting rid of the "Windows Store" version of MB and going back to the Portable version, for reasons commented on elsewhere (better ability to update, etc.), and include whitelisting in Windows Defender to be sure you have all your bases covered there.

Thank you for your comments.

Now have deleted Avast and "reinstated" Windows Defender - although I have previously used Avast at the same time as MB with no problems. But I'll try anything now, just so as to get MB working again, provided it is within my capabilities.

Will install MB portable from the MB website.

Do not know how to "white-list" MB with Windows Defender - will have to read that up!

Not optimistic though.

Here goes.......

Cheers.

Thanking you.

Still working on it.

Some files are now being recognised - some not.

Not really sure what has brought about a change in behaviour.  Will try out a number of different permutations.

Would like to get back to using Avast again, as I used to do just over a week ago, without any problems when used at the same time as MB.

Will let you know hoe i get one.

Work in progress...........

Cheers.

You can use Avast if you want. Just be certain to whitelist all of MB's files and directories. Once whitelisted in Avast you shouldn't have this problem again.
Download the latest MusicBee v3.5 or 3.6 patch from here.
Unzip into your MusicBee directory and overwrite existing files.

Thank you everyone for your most helpful suggestions.

Will let you know how I get on tomorrow when I have fully "road tested" the changes.

Certainly learnt quite a bit during these exchanges.

Cheers,

Hello Folks,

Everything seems to working perfectly (fingers crossed) and even using Avast security.

Not sure what the problem (s) were.

Re-installed MB, MB remote and Avast - been downloading all day, and MB has been working all the time.

What I particularly like about MB is that I can download and play APE and FLAC files without having to "split" them up, MB will do this for most of them - just a few are not accomplished.

All sent to my Audio Chromecasts about the house using "Electron"/"Audio-cast" installed software.

Since I mostly listen to classical music, I have my own "radio station" playing a random selection of high quality classical movements interspersed with some C & W, jazz, lounge music, folk - with an occasional complete CD of a symphony or concerto (from the "unsplit" APE or FLAC files). And this can all be monitored on my tablet (using 'MB remote') whilst cooking the dinner.

Wow - I'm in heaven.

Thanks for helping me out.

Do hope that it continues to work OK.

A re-donation submission is now due THANKS Steve Mayall. :)  :)  :)  :)
