I do a LOT of file re-location and never seen this error before... at least until I installed this version of MB a few days ago

are you using a language version of MB and if so, which language?

if not, can you update to the latest version from the first forum topic

hi mate,

I'm using the standard English version downloaded directly from here:

https://getmusicbee.com/downloads/

EDIT:

the same error is occurring in version 3.1.6585

I left out some important information in the OP:

this error occurs when trying to re-locate files in directory #1, but not directory #2. for example:

Z:\LABELS\P\Pinkman\YYYY - Artist1 - Album1
Z:\LABELS\P\Pinkman\YYYY - Artist2 - Album2

I change the filenames in both directories, then re-scan the files in MusicBee

error for all files contained in directory #1
no error for all the files contained in for directory #2

I tested this with identical filenames and identical tags (artist, album, track title and track number; all other tags deleted using the extended tag viewer in mp3tag)

the directory character length is also identical (well under 255)

directories #1 and #2 live on the same hard disk

the music files are identical, except for the filenames and tags. I checked them in AudioTester and they passed with no error

testing more...
- set the filenames in directory #2 (the "bad" directory) to the original expected filenames
- rescan, no problem
- change the filenames in directory #2 to something unexpected
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - error
- change the filenames back to the original expected filenames
- rescan, no problem. play the file in MB, no problem

testing...
- change the filename in directory #2 to something unexpected
- start a full MB re-scan for new files
- confirm the removal of the old files from the library
- play the file, no problem
- change the filename again
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - ERROR

testing...
- move the files to a different folder altogether (directory #3)
- start a full MB re-scan for new files
- confirm the removal of the old files from the library
- play the file, no problem
- change the filename again inside the new directory (directory #3)
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - ERROR

testing...
- create a new directory (directory #4)
- copy/paste (not move!) the files from directory #3 to directory #4
- change the filename again inside directory #4
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - NO ERROR. all good!

final test...
- copy/paste the files from directory #4 to directory #2 (or #3)
- delete the files from directory #4
- start a full MB re-scan for new files
- confirm the removal of the old files from the library
- play the file, no problem
- change the filename again inside directory #2 (or #3)
- rescan
- double click to trigger re-location window - ERROR!

I can't figure this one out at all

there is only one place the error can be and thats the reporting message that MB displays. Is it possible the filename contains "{n}" where n is a digit?

edit:
could you try this version:
http://musicbee.niblseed.com/V3_1/MusicBee31_Patched.zip

unzip and replace the existing musicbee files

nope. the filenames do not contain "{n}" or any other problematic characters. the filenames go like this:

01 - Artist - Track Title

no leading / tailing spaces, no foreign characters, no other numbers except the track number
