When you have enabled 'multi-character searches' for the a-z bar, MB will store the clicked letters for a few seconds so you are able to click another one to add it so to create a search string.

But there is no indication on the a-z bar if a letter has been clicked, and if it is still 'in memory' (i.e. if you still have time to enter the next letter before the cache gets reset again)

It would be very helpful if the clicked letters would remain highlighted (bold?, coloured?) for the duration that MB stores them before automatically resetting.

i have added a small visual indicator
Thanks Steven, but I'm wondering if the 'small visual indicator' could be somewhat less small.
It took me four tries before I caught the '+' at the right side of the bar. Perhaps not using a superscripted + it would be more visible. I'm certainly open to other suggestions.

As your concentrating on the letters, it's quite easy to miss the little "+" symbol on the end of the list.
Maybe as originally suggested

or a glow/blur around all the items?

I would expect the indicator to be next to the letter in question.  Definitely easy to miss at the end of the row.

Should this be working with key presses as well as directly clicking on the letters?
