Play count only increments in the last 2-3 seconds of a song

It seems that regardless of what I change my "play count +1" settings to, the play count for each song only increments when there are 2-3 seconds left in a song. Is there something I'm missing in configuring the play count to increment much earlier in a song?

No answer for you but I have exactly the same problem, would prefer it to incremement in the first 10secs

If you're logged into last.fm, you're stuck with their settings, but if not, you can configure this in.preferences.  now playing preferences, I believe, but it might be player preferences.

Edit: I see you mentioned that in the first post, sorry.  It may be that you're not seeing the play count update until the end because mb waits to release the file before updating it.  I suggest experimenting with stopping the track part way through to see if the play count is incremented after stopping.
