Is the custom views option for columns in the track details panel currently absent?

If it's under review, maybe an implementation as I suggested   here  could work nicely?

This could be used for both the track detail columns, and for the column browser columns, giving that possibility for presets too.

I'm trying to display the album duration (and, possibly, group duration) in the main panel when I click an album.
How can I do that?

Probably not exactly what you want but:
Click the arrow by artists, customize panel, configure expanded panel, and set sub-grouping header to album duration.

Custom views should be most;ly unchanged from v2.5 (apart from the ability to specify overrides for certain panels and elements) and that included the Track Details layout
ie, to create a custom view, click on the selector for the main panel/ Custom Views/ Copy Current View Settings To...
Perhaps i am not understanding what you are asking?

I guess I have no clue what 'the selector for the main panel' is.

in v2 I would use this:

In v3 that opens the new config panel which has no reference to custom views that I can see.

What do you think about my suggestion for presets? At least for the column browser it would be very useful.

are you seriously saying that you have been using v3 all this time and not clicked the selector button which has a drop-down arrow on it and is on the left of the main panel header?
sorry but i find that really hard to believe

You're right, what you suggested isn't what I was aiming for. Setting sub-grouping header to album duration does show album duration at the cost of giving up of sub grouping, which I use, as you can see in the screenshot I posted.
I guess part of my question is a feature request for group duraiton tag/virtual tag?

Of course now that you point it out, I can plainly see the sub-header even though I was starring right at it.  In that case why not configure one of your virtual tags to combine the two like: <Disc #> - <Album Duration> or something like that and set that as the header?  They will still be grouped and also show the duration. Unfortunately that still gives you the total album duration and not the group duration that you want.

To be fair, it took me a surprisingly long time to find that menu.  I kept looking in the new layout menu.

Since no one came up with how to do it I conclude that it's not some setting nested deep in MB's labyrinthine customization options but rather something that can't be done at the moment. Therefore it is a feature request.

sometimes some of the things people say just dont sound believable to me but i guess I know exactly how things are done and assume too much. In answer to your suggestion about having presets, its not a bad idea but i probably wont do it because there is already custom views intended for that purpose and it would also clutter the set displayed fields dialog (not completely ruling it out though)
Also I acknowledge that creating custom views even in v2.5 is not ideal because you have to create the custom view right at the start rather than saving-as at the end, and that can cause some initial confusion if you are not aware of that.

the fix is uploaded to:

I'm trying this build now, but it doesn't seem to have completely fixed the problem.
you will need to be specific about what is still not working as you expect and what you did so i can reproduce it

Edit: I think I've narrowed down the issue. Now when double clicking the artist, albums are sequenced in alphabetical order.
However with my current setup albums are sorted by year (desc), so I guess the sorting preference is not changing the behavior.
