Obviously I got this idea from Songbird, but I thought it is pretty useful. I like that you can narrow the results to artists in your library only.

The Songbird plugin gets the data from MusicBrainz.

I agree this would be awesome. When I switched from Songbird this was one of the few things I knew I was going to miss.

i did some research into how this can be done and looks straight-forward. Most of the time would be building a decent UI for it. So i might do a quick and crude interface to start with then at a later date do something nicer

This is a good idea. Some  suggestions for the first GUI.

- Call it "Upcoming Releases"
- Base it on the current MusicBee "Album and Tracks" view and the list on the right hand of this page http://criticulture.com/upcoming_music_releases/
- Some verbage at the top to explain what the info is and where it comes from.

pretty much so, although i might have a Services node like songbird as i can imagine other things in the future.
Any bright ideas for an icon for this?

I'd probably use a "date" icon like this one here.

Have added to the mockup above (couldn't be bothered to mock up a services node)

one suggestion : exclude "various artists" when selecting "restrict to artists in library"

Wow. That was quick!  Looks good.  Little unsure about Services being second level under web tho.  First, services and web browsing are different things and second it add complexity.  Would prefer it to have it's own node.

i know your right but for the near term there is only one service. I might rename the "Web" node to "Internet"

How about "External Services"

Also i was thinking that it might be usefull to allow the user to filter this list somehow (e.g. by most played or more than three stars?).  I see a lot of stuff in mine that is of no interest.

Looks and works good, but would it be possible to filter Various Artists anyhow? I mean, my results are full of totally unrelated albums... But great feature anyhow.

BTW you can check if Lastf.fm API doesn't have an access to theirs New Album service. The more sources, the better, right? Or you can check this service http://www.soundamus.net/ which works the best for me.

One more thing - at least for me it would make more sense to sort if from the newest ones to the oldest ones (for instance have July releases at the top and June releases at the bottom).
