Not quite sure how to diagnose this issue as it seems to be different things each time.

For example, if I open MusicBee I might see this error:
Quote

Then if I close MusicBee and open it again, it's fine.

Then if i close it and open it again, I get this error:

After that last one, it automatically opens ErrorLog.dat with the following info:

Close and reopen and it's fine.

Close and reopen and I get:
Quote
Unable to load MusicBeeBass.dll (...)

Etc etc etc. Sometimes it opens fine and when it does throw an error it's a different error each time. It seems that only some errors record in ErrorLog.dat, and even then it's different errors.

Additionally, I am constantly losing preferences such as custom sort orders, column layouts, keybindings, etc. I assume it's all related to the above.

I've tried reinstalling, using portable, using Windows App Store version. I have tried with normal Windows permissions and with UAC turned off.

Any help in diagnosing would be appreciated!

Welcome to the forum inartistic

The error messages you provided may be useful to the developer, so he might respond to those himself.

For the mean time, the version you are using is slightly older, so some issues may have been solved with more recent updates.
You having tried to solve it by using various versions such as 'install' 'Store' and 'portable' is recommendable, but also may have introduced some complicating factors.

A more broad and generic advice from me:
If you are willing to make a clean start:

- find existing files and folders that contain settings and preferences that are important to you that you may want to restore to a new install later on, and back them up somewhere
(see this post to get an idea of relevant files and folders regarding this)
- remove any instances and traces of existing 'installed' and 'Store' versions
- install v3.5 portable (preferably somewhere outside Windows' controlled folders that are on your C: drive)
- update it to v3.6 using the latest v3.6 update patch
- restore things that are important to you that you had backup-ed earlier

If you then still experience error messages, post them in the Bug reports topic.

After that last one, it automatically opens ErrorLog.dat with the following info:
Code
12/1/2024 11:35:47 AM - 10.0.22631.0 - 3.5.8698.34385D - System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access is denied.
Ensure that your windows account has permissions to write to the directory and file.
F:\Music\MusicBee\Podcasts\Subscriptions.dat
It's heavily linked to file permission issues it seems (inability to save settings, read files, opening .dlls, etc).
So just ensure you have also whitelisted MusicBee in any antivirus software that you may be running.

He's probably got pieces of MusicBee installs of 3 different kinds scattered all over his PC.

1. What hiccup said:  delete anything and everything related to MusicBee except your music files of course;  start with running any "uninstall" entries from Control Panel/Programs and restart your PC, then do a File Explorer search (include hidden files & folders) and delete anything with "MusicBee" in the name.

Then, install the latest Portable version in a folder outside of the Windows permissions game, like "C:\MusicBee."

2.  What Mayibongwe said:  whitelist the Portable version entire folder in Windows Defender and any other antivirus you may be using.

Unfortunately none of these suggestions seem to have helped.

I did indeed completely uninstall and delete all traces of MusicBee, and then try from the portable version.

I have tried both 3.5 and 3.6 (with a complete uninstall and wipe of any remaining traces between) and still had the issue.

I have tried in the default programs folder, directly under C:\MusicBee, and on an external F:\MusicBee (with complete wipes between).

There is no antivirus aside from the default Windows Defender, and neither whitelisting the MusicBee folders/contents, nor turning off protection fixed the issue.

None of the files/folders are marked as Read Only, and changing the permissions to Full Control under the Security properties did not seem to make a different.

The issue is still seemingly random and intermittent. Sometimes it opens fine, sometimes it can't access a dll, sometimes there's a compile error, etc.

If anyone has any other ideas to try please let me know! Or if I should be posting in Bug Reports instead just let me know and I'll move over there.

These are also the symptoms of a failing drive. If a HDD, run a chkdsk c: /r on it.  If a SSD, see if CrystalDiskInfo flags anything.

Everything past the file name is data so the developer can see what's going on. That being said, is that the entire error message? Typically an error message is longer, but it's possible it's not in this case.
Download the latest MusicBee v3.6 patch from here.
Unzip into your MusicBee directory and overwrite existing files.

there isnt anything MB can do about this. Perhaps its your security software blocking MB from accessing files, in which try whitelisting MB in that software

didn't really think it was a problem with MB, just wondering if anyone knew more about getting it unblocked. i have ownership of the folder and full permissions. reformatted the disk not in quick mode. have been through the firewall settings over and over, and yes it's been whitelisted.

@deannab, had you forgotten the login details to @inartistic? (assuming you're the same user)

Anyway, it's nice to see that you gave MusicBee a chance again after so long.
Most people, myself included, wouldn't bother messing around with software that gave us such a hard time the first time around (irrespective of who/what was at fault for the 'hard time').

With this kind of commitment, MusicBee must come well-recommended!

Just so you know, you have three days left before the MP will be released on you and will drag your ass back in.
