Hi, all! Long-time happy user of MusicBee here, but I'm new to the forums.

I experienced an issue yesterday when using MusicBee to edit some files, and it seems that (some of) the files were actually deleted when this happened.

Context: I'm running MusicBee 3.5.8447 on Windows 10. My music files are on a NAS drive on my local network, in a folder which I have mapped as the M:\ drive.

Yesterday I attempted to update the album artwork for an MP3 album. While I was doing this, an external problem was occurring with the network. I wasn't surprised when MusicBee took a long time to attempt to save the changes I was making, then gave me an error message saying it hadn't been able to save some of the files. However, I was surprised when I went to try again today, and found that some of the MP3 files are gone.

There are 11 tracks on the album. I got error messages for 9 of them:
Quote
01 - High Flyin' Bird.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     The network is busy.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000010.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\01 - High Flyin' Bird.mp3
02 - I Can't Take It Anymore.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     An unexpected network error occurred.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000011.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\02 - I Can't Take It Anymore.mp3
03 - Morning, Morning.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     An unexpected network error occurred.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000012.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\03 - Morning, Morning.mp3
04 - Adam.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     The network is busy.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000013.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\04 - Adam.mp3
05 - Follow.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     The network is busy.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000014.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\05 - Follow.mp3
06 - Three Day Eternity.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     An unexpected network error occurred.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000015.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\06 - Three Day Eternity.mp3
08 - Handsome Johnny.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     The network is busy.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000017.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\08 - Handsome Johnny.mp3
09 - San Francisco Bay Blues.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     The network is busy.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000018.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\09 - San Francisco Bay Blues.mp3
10 - Just Like a Woman.mp3  --  M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\
     The network is busy.
C:\Users\micro\AppData\Local\Temp\MusicBee_000019.mp3 --> M:\Richie Havens\Mixed Bag\10 - Just Like a Woman.mp3

Of the 11 MP3 files, 5 are still where they were, 1 seems to have been corrupted, and 5 are completely gone.

Here's what's in the folder now:

The 6 affected files are the ones for which MusicBee recorded the error message "The network is busy." The files for which it recorded the error message "An unexpected network error occurred" are fine.

I can understand how a file might end up corrupted if a network error occurred while it was being saved. But how did 5 of them disappear?

I don't know how MusicBee handles files, or what it was using that local Temp folder for. (I've checked, there are no .mp3 files in it, or in the Recycle Bin!) But it seems odd -- and certainly undesirable! -- for a network error to result in deleted files.

Any insight would be appreciated!

if you are adding pictures MB would have needed to recreate the file. It does that to the windows temp folder and when the temp file is successfully saved MB calls the windows replace file function to move the file from the temp folder and replace the existing file - i think that's a pretty normal approach. However it seems the windows replace file function failed but its not something I can control, so I dont think i can help

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I was adding pictures, yes.

The replace file function allows you to make a backup copy, doesn't it? Which presumably could then be kept if the function returned an error message.

you could try using this version if you are not using the store version of MB
https://getmusicbee.com/patches/MusicBee35_Patched.zip
unzip and replace the existing musicbee application files

it retries 3 times
