Author Topic: F2 to rename  (Read 2398 times)

Currently the shortcut key to rename a file is Shift-Enter .. this brings up the dialog box where the left hand tab allows you to rename the file (at the bottom by editing the filename in the full file path). This is not very intuitive and slow.

THis idea is in 3 parts:
1 - A better approach is to assign the shortcut key F2 to perform a 'rename' function - in common with all other windows applications.
2 - In the short term this could default to the first tab of the edit details dialogue box.
3 - Longer term why not allow it to 'rename' in the same way that windows explorer does - the 'filename' field (ie the entry in the column 'filename') becomes editable text?  .. or if this is not possible then a simple dialog box with just the (editable) filename in it would be an improvement.

thanks!

2 - In the short term this could default to the first tab of the edit details dialogue box.
You can set F2 (or any other key) to open the tag editor and rename from there.  Preferences > Hotkeys
Download the latest MusicBee v3.6 patch from here.
Unzip into your MusicBee directory and overwrite existing files.

Thanks for this, its a good work around for the short term.
However Id still suggest changing the default because
a) new users will not know this workaround, and
b) even using this method, it doesnt open to the 'rename' part of the dialogue box, which is not in line with what you expect when choosing a 'rename' key,
c) there are still too many clicks really, which is annoying if you do a lot of renaming (which I do).

If you're doing lots of manual renaming, you're not really using MB to the best of it's abilities. A better way would be to set up a template you're happy with and activate auto-organise, allowing the file to be automatically renamed based on your tags, or use Send To>Organised Folder. As MB isn't designed to allow easy manual file renaming specifically because there are many automatic options, this is a -1 from me.
Bold words in my posts are links unless expressly stated otherwise.

If I want to do automatic renaming I use other more powerful software as it doesn't need the ability to play the files if it's just reading tags or using templates. It's the manual option which is missing.

The type of renaming I want to do cannot be automated as you need to listen to each file first.
That's why inside the player is the best place to do manual renaming, rather than outside the player, hence the feature request.
