Bug Reports / Save to Folder path under CD RIP settings not working
« on: September 14, 2023, 02:17:10 AM »
When using the path identifiers to RIP a new CD, Music Bee no longer creates a new folder for the incoming CD they way it use to.
for example,

<genre>\<composer>\<album>\

use to work, now I get an error saying:
encoding failed: the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

is that not the correct syntax above?

Questions / Album / Album and Tracks
« on: December 22, 2022, 04:21:40 PM »
Why does selecting Album and Tracks for display create multiple listings of the same album with tracks all dispersed but if you go to just Album, then the whole set of tracks is withing the album. I want to see an Album with all the tracks listed beside them, not a whole bunch of albums that I have to hunt around for to find missing tracks etc. Wrong setting somewhere?

General Discussions / Artist vs. Album Artist
« on: December 15, 2021, 06:03:45 PM »
Are there industry standards for hierarchy in selecting which performer is considered Artist vs. the Album Artist and how does it shift in accordance to genre?

For example, if we were talking about Beethoven's Violin Concerto, who is considered the Artist in this album (real album) where the performers are:?
Composer: Beethoven, Ludwig van
Soloist: Itzhak Perlman
Conductor: Carlo Maria Giulini
Orchestra: Philharmonia Orchestra

It literally could be considered any one of these and I often have to do a search on any of these performing tags to find stuff. So, I'm wondering if there is an industry standard here? And how does that intertwine with like Pop. If you go over to like a Michael Jackson cd, they you pretty much don't need any of those tags. You can consider him all of the above, unless you go dig deep and find the track composer, if his band backup has as ensemble name and doubtfully uses a conductor, which are rarely listed on the cd in the first place. But, even in that case, is Jackson considered the 'artist' or the 'album artist', or both?

The reason I ask is that, if artist and album artist are not done consistently, then sorting on them has no significance. For example, often a classical music CD will have two major works on it, say, a Brahms symphony and a Dvorak symphony. So, now, if you set the artist to the composer, then a search (sort) will bring up a piece that is labeled incorrectly 1 of the two times, but if you label the artist at the conductor, then both those two symphonies are not searchable (through sort), basically. Therein lies the difficulty.

(side note - does the forum have a way to see when a specific thread has a response?)

Questions / TAGS(2)
« on: December 15, 2021, 05:46:26 PM »
Is the only way to reach these through edit and by clicking on the Tags (2) tab? Sounds like a silly question, but I am trying to streamline manual data input, and the more tabs I have to click, the longer it takes. I only need a couple additional tags for orchestra and soloist and would love to be able to force them to show up on the Tags tab, but I am assuming that Tags (2) are additional tags added by Music Bee, so that is not appropriate?

Also, can Tags (2) be defined textually for what they refer to, or is it just custom1, etc? In other words, can you label custom1 to 'orchestra', etc.?

Questions / iObit Malware and MusicBee
« on: December 12, 2021, 01:31:35 AM »
If you install iObit's malware program, MusicBee will not be able to find your files and play them. I am assuming there is a setting somewhere to allow this through the malware protection, but I have no clue where to even begin to look for that.

So, for the time being, I can not use malware if I want to use MusicBee.
Groove music works fine with the malware program, so it must be MusicBee that is not allowing things through?

Questions / MusicBee will not play files?

Why would MusicBee no be able to play almost any files in the library, but groove music can?

Questions / Basic Install and Use Instructions?
« on: December 12, 2021, 12:53:10 AM »
Where are these, because I can not find them anywhere. I go to the help page, but no where does it actually tell you have to use the program let alone how to install a library?

Questions / Source file not found??

Why does my library show "The source file for track..." could not be found for the entire library after I did a rescan?

General Discussions / Classical Music Audiophiles sorting strategies?
« on: December 08, 2021, 07:52:31 PM »
I have long put off digitally loading my classical music collection as the sheer numbers are staggering, but in recent years I have decided to give this program a go, as I continually run into windows mismanagement of my discs through their interminability never ending software changes (Microsoft in the 21st century just gives up on anything that doesn't sell well - it's embarrassing.) and do not want to use something cross platform, like iTunes, etc. So, MusicBee is the closest program I have found to be able to do what I need, but am wondering how classical music collectors deal with tags and sorting to help me before I get my library too big and have to go back and redo all my metadata tags.

I only ever want to sort on Composer, but that is near impossible when you start to think about sorting based on performer, tags, etc. For example, I want to catalog and sort the following disc of Beethoven's music:

Composer: Beethoven, Ludwig van (have to use the comma, otherwise it will sort first name; first name sort means next to nothing don't understand its use)
Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73 - "Emperor" (don't get me started on tracks, ugh)
Performer: Rudolph Serkin
Conductor: Leonard Bernstein
Orchestra: New York Philharmonic

Where do people put those five elements? The tags (which I don't believe are set by programs) are always used in different manners as nobody seems to understand how most libraries catalog music (if they did metatags would be consistent!).

I have been putting them as follows:
composer: Beethoven, Ludwig van
album: Piano Concerto...
album artist: Rudolph Serkin
conductor: Leonard Bernstein
publisher: NY Philharmonic (I'm out of fields, and this is my best alternative?)

Unfortunately, this is not a perfect solution, as, if I am cataloging say Bruckner Symphonies, they I really need that publisher tag for the edition, which is huge for those works, then I'm out of tags and having different tags float, which doesn't work, etc., hence my annoyance.

Also, concerning sorting on composer name, does anyone use sorting to good effect? Do you have to set each disc to sort specifically and how does it affect the entire collection? I don't like using a comma in my composer field, but it fixes many sorting problems without having to individually set each sorting field for each track? Or am I missing something.

Thanks.

Questions / File Library Open does nothing?
« on: December 07, 2021, 12:41:07 AM »
Had to reset windows. Now, after I reinstalled MusicBee, when I go to File/Library/Open, there is nothing to open? How do you load a saved libary?

I will make this brief. Classical music collection, very large, have looked for years for a program to handle it the specifics of that kind of a library and they usually fall down somewhere. That said, this program so far looks like it might just handle it, but when I go to import a CD it brings in track information from the wrong version of a different CD.

Which Data Base is MB looking at and can I look for alternative cd ID3 tags, etc. or do I have to manually enter all that for when it says there is not date for that CD?  And it is not the same recording, I know. It just thinks it is. The people who enter this stuff usually bastardize classical albums beyond recognition.

What sites house this data, if I have to I will enter these correctly and upload that to those DB's. But I have literally thousands of classical CDs so was hoping most have been done correctly, or at least close.
