I have long put off digitally loading my classical music collection as the sheer numbers are staggering, but in recent years I have decided to give this program a go, as I continually run into windows mismanagement of my discs through their interminability never ending software changes (Microsoft in the 21st century just gives up on anything that doesn't sell well - it's embarrassing.) and do not want to use something cross platform, like iTunes, etc. So, MusicBee is the closest program I have found to be able to do what I need, but am wondering how classical music collectors deal with tags and sorting to help me before I get my library too big and have to go back and redo all my metadata tags.
I only ever want to sort on Composer, but that is near impossible when you start to think about sorting based on performer, tags, etc. For example, I want to catalog and sort the following disc of Beethoven's music:
Composer: Beethoven, Ludwig van (have to use the comma, otherwise it will sort first name; first name sort means next to nothing don't understand its use)
Piano Concerto No. 5, Op. 73 - "Emperor" (don't get me started on tracks, ugh)
Performer: Rudolph Serkin
Conductor: Leonard Bernstein
Orchestra: New York Philharmonic
Where do people put those five elements? The tags (which I don't believe are set by programs) are always used in different manners as nobody seems to understand how most libraries catalog music (if they did metatags would be consistent!).
I have been putting them as follows:
composer: Beethoven, Ludwig van
album: Piano Concerto...
album artist: Rudolph Serkin
conductor: Leonard Bernstein
publisher: NY Philharmonic (I'm out of fields, and this is my best alternative?)
Unfortunately, this is not a perfect solution, as, if I am cataloging say Bruckner Symphonies, they I really need that publisher tag for the edition, which is huge for those works, then I'm out of tags and having different tags float, which doesn't work, etc., hence my annoyance.
Also, concerning sorting on composer name, does anyone use sorting to good effect? Do you have to set each disc to sort specifically and how does it affect the entire collection? I don't like using a comma in my composer field, but it fixes many sorting problems without having to individually set each sorting field for each track? Or am I missing something.
Thanks.
