Photini works very well.

I've had good experiences of restoring files backed up by Bvckup2.

The genius of this "simple" piece of software is that it makes a simple mirror of whatever folder trees it's been set up to copy, and that it can be set up to automatically do that as soon as an external drive is plugged in (using USB hardware IDs).

It copies only those parts of a file that have changed, so if only 1% of a file has changed, e.g. metadata edited, Bvckup2 works out what needs to be changed in the current backup target to create an exact current copy, and thus backup completes very quickly once the initial copy has been made (deleted files in the source can be automatically archived in the destination as well, so nothing gets lost).

I have three external drives of various sizes, and I've set up Bvckup2 so that copies of files I care about are on at least two of them, and the program runs as a service in the background (with a program UI to control it), so that just plugging in a drive gets backups done without manual intervention.

It does not handle restoration; for that I use simple robocopy.exe on the command line.

MusicBee Wishlist / Pooling device storage areas for synchronization?
« on: June 28, 2012, 10:05:14 PM »
My Nokia N8-00 appears as a device with 3 storage areas: "Phone Memory", "Mass Storage", and "MicroSD Card" (the latter is named whatever name I've given to the card).

Music is stored in subdirectories under root directory "Music" on the latter two storage areas.

Using default device settings, the device seems to be addressed as an MTP device when transferring media files to it with MusicBee (but the device's own settings can easily be changed explicitly to appear as a USB storage device or MPT device).

The problem is that even as an MTP device, MusicBee's device synchronization settings only address 1 storage area at a time: if I run out of space on one storage area, I must explicitly change the settings to another storage area.

Is there some way to enumerate and choose to pool certain storage areas on a device, which would all use the same file path settings in MusicBee's device synchronization settings? So that the resulting larger, pooled storage area would be managed as one integrated destination for synchronization?

My Nokia N8-00 phone has internal 16GB "Storage" flash memory and a microSD slot for cards up to 32GB (I have a 16GB).  When the phone is connected to my PC via USB in "Media Storage Mode" (which I think is MTP protocol), the MusicBee synchronization can target either the internal flash or the microSD storage, but not pool both at once. I still have 11GB free on the internal flash but am running out space on the microSD.

What would be great is if the device synchronization setting "Music Root Folder" could have multiple values (using the multiple expanding fields used elsewhere in Musicbee) and pool all the contents of those folders for synchronization purposes.

Difficult? Impossible? Nothing seems impossible in MisicBee! (I am still on 1.4, giving 2.0 a month or two to mature in the bottle, then I will switch.)

All the best for this terrific application.

Portable Devices / Errors in MTP synchronization
« on: December 12, 2011, 05:56:49 AM »
I've started using MusicBee with my new Nokia N8-00 phone, which I set in MTP mode. The files are stored onto the microSDHC card, which the Windows 7 file explorer shows as formatted as a "generic hierarchical" file sysstem (whatever that is--maybe this is how MTP reports file systems).

Some files don't synchronize, and the error messages in the log all look similar to:

Is the problem filename length, or disallowed characters? Other files with similar length transferred OK, as did files with characters like "(" ")".

I still have to try synchronizing with the Nokia in mass-storage mode, I'll report if similar issues arise.
