Questions / Hierarchical playlists
« on: September 17, 2017, 11:54:54 AM »
Hi MusicBee fans

I've got a couple of questions I've been wanting to ask for a while. I've made up my mind about how I want to display/organise my music in MusicBee and I'm wondering if it's possible. I've been tinkering for a while but to no avail. I'll give you my idea.

I want to make playlists based on genres of music. That's not hard to do, but I also rate all of my music, giving them 1 to 5 stars. Now what I wanna do is the following. Presume I have a main genre of music (I'll take Goatrance as an example) and I want to divide this playlist in subdivisions according to the subgenres like this:

Goatrance
 -Oldskool
 -Newskool
 -Full On
 -Nithzonot
 -Suomi
 -Forest
 -Dark

This isn't so hard, I could do this using playlist folders. But what I really want to do is create extra playlists for each subgenre according to the rating I give the songs from the subgenres. Like this:

Goatrance
 -***
 -**
 -Oldskool
-*** (three stars for an oldskool song)
-** (two stars for an oldskool song)
 -Newskool
   -***
   -**
 - Full On
   -***
   -**
And so on.

Set up kinda like an hierarchical structure: Songs from all the subgenre playlists appear in the main playlist (Goatrance) and all three star songs appear in the main three star playlist. But only three star Newskool songs appear in the Newskool three star playlist. If I give a two star song, three stars, it should be transferred to the corresponding three star playlist and no longer show up in the two star playlist. If I click I on, let's say, the Suomi playlist it should display all Suomi songs, regardless of rating, but only two star Suomi songs show up in the corresponding playlist.

I'd like to do this for multiple genres of music: Blues, Metal, EDM, Scores, Classical,... So too that all the all songs with the same rating could appear in one big playlist, regardless of genre and I could choose a genre or subgenre with a rating. Preferably all the rating- and subgenre playlist would be collapsible, leaving only the main genres visible, displaying everything with a couple of clicks.

I've been walking around with this idea for quite a while and this is how I want to do it. But I have no idea if MusicBee is capable of this, and if it is, how I could do it. Thanks in advance for every reply.

Thank you for your reply. And after reading you're post and checking the \musicbee folder I understand. Musicbee did exactly what I asked it to do, just at that time I didn't fully comprehend what it just was that I asked it to do.

It seems that the process of going manually over all my files and cleaning up the tags and sorting them in folders can't be avoided. I was just hoping MB could do that for me. Well, better get to it then  ::)

Questions / Working with Auto-organise?
« on: August 24, 2016, 04:44:37 PM »
Today I tried the Auto-organize function in MusicBee but I was a little dissapointed in the result. From what I read in following article http://getmusicbee.com/forum/index.php?topic=2663.0

"Auto-organise puts your tracks inside folders, organised by the criteria you choose, and renames the files so that they follow a common naming criteria." And in doing so copies them to the D:\me\my music\musicbee folder.

As my current music folder is a mess I was really hoping MusicBee could reorganize and relocate them according to the existing tags.
What I mean by that is: create a new folder for every artist, placing all the albums of that artist in that folder with new folders for every album and with each album folder containing the tracks from that album. Renaming them in the process by my chosen criteria.

Is MusicBee capable of doing that?

I'm still learning to work with the program and I'm not really adept at it yet. So I apologise for any wrong assumptions and statements I might have made in this post. Love the program however!

Questions / Subcategories in playlists
« on: June 13, 2016, 09:17:24 PM »
Hi, I'm quite new to MusicBee and made the switch from Foobar a while ago and can say I'm very happy with the player/manager. It's got a wide array of functions and options, and it's highly customisable, so I love it. But I've been looking for an option on any music manager I've used before but I've just been not able to do or find it. I was wondering if musicbee can make subcategories in playlists. For example, if I would click on the folder 'Rock'  the subplaylists would open, in this case Grunge, Metal, Classic, etc. The main playlist would contain all the files from all the subcategories as one big playlist, but when one of the subcategories was selected it would only show the files in that folder. Is it possible to do this with musicbee (one way or the other), and how would I do that? Thanks in advance :)
