I know that you can edit the start and end times of a track via the tag panel in settings, but I'm wondering if there's any way to do it so that it only applies for that track in an individual playlist and not the entire program? I'd like to be able to have multiple start/end times for a single track depending on what playlist it's in.

I'm assuming this is more of a wishlist post, but I'm always a bit tepid on starting off there as I'm never sure if it's just something simple I'm missing

TIA

Questions / Re: Sorting the group by option using a virtual tag
« on: July 15, 2023, 03:40:49 AM »
A trick to achieve this would be to add zero-width spaces before the names of the eras.
If you e.g. add 4 of them to Showa era, 3 of them to Heisei era, they will be sorted at the top as you desire.
Repeat for the other eras.

Here is a zero-width space that you can copy by clicking the copy icon on the right:
Code

Oh, this is genius. I did have a bit of an issue with it though; it works for some albums, but others will replace the zero-width spaces with question marks. From a cursory glance, it seems that files encoded with Lame 3.98 will have this problem, but the others encoded with libFLAC work fine. So converting them (thank god for MusicBee's in built converter) fixed that!

Regardless, thank you so much for the help hiccup. I would have never thought of it, but it's such an elegant solution. Love ya

Questions / Sorting the group by option using a virtual tag
« on: July 14, 2023, 05:05:26 PM »
Basically, to attain a "custom" sorting in the subgrouping option, I label the values with numbers and then use a virtual tag to remove them. It keeps the order whilst hiding the numbers, and it works perfectly as a subheading:

Comparison of the subheading with virtual tag enabled, disabled and basic unnumbered tags

Where it doesn't work is in the main group by option. The virtual tag will remove the numbers as per the delimiter, however, it won't retain the sorting. For example, the idea here is to order the Godzilla scores by their respective eras. This is the tag without the virtual tag active, showing the actual ordering I'm after. Note that it's ordered how the subgrouping example shown above functions with the virtual tag active.

The virtual tag I use, $RSplit(<Era>,-,1), will remove the number and delimiter, but it'll alphabetise the subsequent groups rather than retain the original tag's sorting. This is with the virtual tag active:

Honestly, thinking about it, the fact it retains the sorting for the way I use it with the subgrouping is maybe not intended, but I figured I'd ask if anyone has any ideas on how I can get this working for the group function? I gather that there's an inconsistency here either way. They're the exact same virtual tag, and to some extent it does function in the primary group option given it's removing the sort numbers.

I'm super bad with virtual tag formatting so I would not be at all surprised to learn I'm just missing something obvious here.

Thanks for your time!

+1, to add onto this, I'd love if we could set different start/end times for the same track depending on the playlist it's in.

In the expanded panel settings set the "restrict columns displayed" value to 2

Thanks for the reply Steven, but I did mention this above and it still has the same problem. These two are restricted to two columns and are in the same playlist together:

Is that intentional, then? Because from what I can see, the wider spacing is triggered by larger track titles.

Edit: Yeah it's definitely the track titles, see track 1

6
Prior to the last update, the number of columns as well as their width were consistently spaced:

------

However, 3.5.8296 has changed things a bit. With the same settings as the preceding update, if no column restrictions are in place, albums will display as a single column if any track's title is too long, and the rest will be inconsistently spaced:

If columns are restricted to their pre-update numbers (2 for me in this view), the column spacing will be inconsistent between albums (in the same view):

------

I'd chuck this in bug reports as I don't feel this is intentional, but I figured I'd ask if I'm just missing a setting. I've had a fairly close look through all relevant settings and nothing is standing out to me.

Thanks guys!

MusicBee Wishlist / Add descriptions to folders
« on: July 27, 2022, 07:18:47 AM »
Hi,

I'm wanting to add descriptions to folders for use in playlist headers. Between the track and album count, duration, header, and icon, the functionality of the playlist header is largely same for folders as it is in playlists, ie:

Folder:

Playlist:

It might be worth adding a settings panel for folders in their individual context menus with similar options as playlists (name, view - which you can already set for folders via the program header, and description).

Not a deal breaker obviously, it's a veeeery minor wish, so all good if not!

this is done for the next v3.5 update

https://getmusicbee.com/patches/MusicBee35_Patched.zip

Oh what a pleasant surprise this was, you made my day, Steven. Love you!

9
My request is for an option to display only the folder's name in a folder playlist header rather than its path. As it stands, this is how a folder's name is displayed:

Both playlists and auto playlists display only their name, ie rather than Themes\DC Comics\Batman\The Batman, it's just The Batman:

Sorry if this has been posted about before or if there's actually a way to do this already, I did have a look to see if that's the case but I can't see anything otherwise. You know, it did hit me whilst typing this that it's called a "playlist header" lol. Still, given that folder playlist headers have most of the same functionality (custom backgrounds, icons) of a normal playlist header, I hope this is ok to ask.

Always a king. Thank you so much Steven!

you can already use "Paste Artwork" to save custom pictures for Genre; Genre Category and Grouping.
I will look to also include Custom1..16 for tags that support this

Oh, my bad, sorry -- I am keen on custom thumbnails but it's cool to see it's already been expanded a tad! Thanks for your diligence, Steven.

Bump, and highlighted the section I think op and I are talking about

13
Bumping again, with the update to allow for unique header backgrounds I figured it was worth doing so. I'll add fresh images to show what I mean:

For my purposes, I want to have the header enabled in a specific view / tab as shown below:

But doing so will cause the header to be globally enabled in every view and tab, for example:

I think it'd be a good idea to allow for the display to vary depending on the individual view's setting. Even outside of my pretty specific circumstances, I feel it'd be a relatively recurrent problem when people have varying libraries that have different requirements. I can always toggle it on and off, but at that point it makes it pretty superfluous as it isn't automated.
