Just wanted to ask where everyone finds out about new music. I occasionally visit sites like pitchfork, thequietus, and drownedinsound, but I found that sometimes they only really seem to like specific kinds of music, and I'm also into finding good records from the past as well as recent releases.

So how do you guys find new music to check out?

I use rateyourmusic quite a lot for both newer and older music. Always seems that someone has already listened to even the most obscure artists.

rateyourmusic and sputnikmusic for their group ratings. And then whatever most critic reviewers agree on (on genres I like, of course).

How does rateyourmusic work? I just took a look and it seems like a review site, but will it recommend me albums according to stuff I rate like goodreads or something?

It is a user review site, but they keep a huge list of new and up-coming releases on the home page.
If you sign on, and start listing and rating your own collection, you start getting a list of links generated by what you like/dislike and what other people with similar tastes are listening to. You also get a list of upcoming releases for any artist you have listed in your collection.

I use rateyourmusic for genre exploring. combined with the custom charts it's pretty good for finding new music (but I feel there's a pretty heavy bias towards music I don't really listen to there). Also, last.fm is still a pretty good way of finding new stuff...

Oh I just remembered something I used to use ages ago. It has kind of obvious suggestions but it's quite fun to use regardless.

doesn't provide you with suggestions based on your current listening but www.musicomh.com is a great independent source of album/live reviews.  i find lots of things to check out based on their reviews.

Last.fm is easy to use, and it works outside of the US. Whatever you play gets registered, and the site gives you pretty good suggestions -- this is pretty obvious. The hidden gem is the ability to look into libraries of your closest musical neighbours. This is where you find the really good stuff.

It is good for that. It's not really a hidden feature though

I've got a bunch of places and it depends what mood I'm in when I choose one, currently:

Reddit - Avoid http://www.reddit.com/r/music like the plague, the smaller sub-reddits for specific genres are much better and you can combine them: http://www.reddit.com/r/afrobeat+AvantGardeMusic+balkanbrass+balkanmusic+bluegrass

Rdio + RYM - Rate a bunch of albums on RYM, check the recommendations for albums and the label that they're on, search for the labels on Rdio and add their compilations to my collection (currently 3200). Most of them are also available on Deezer or Spotify.
