I'm using version 1.2.3705 of MusicBee on Windows XP.

I'm trying to transfer files to a older iPod (3rd generation) running
version 2.0.1 firmware.

I don't use iTunes; I've been using Winamp with the device previously.

When I try to use MusicBee with the device it can list the contents
and play them, but I see the message "The device is read-only and
cannot be updated by MusicBee" and of course trying to send files
to the device fails.

I can open Windows Explorer on the device and look at the files; nothing
is marked as read-only.

I would welcome any ideas to make it work.

Thanks.

it sets an ipod as read-only when a write test fails or if specific files are missing.
I vaguely recall it might happen as well if you arent an administrator on your PC - you need to run the at least once as an admin, but it should show an error message indictaing you need to run MB as an administrator, so not likely to be the reason.
However, I can understand for recent iPod 5th generation and i was planning to do an update to add support for 5Gs, but i dont see why an older 3G would cause problems.

danno, have you ever used iTunes with your iPod? The library i use requires you to run iTunes at least once on the iPod for certain files to be installed.

Yes I have, but a few years ago because another media player required the same thing.

At this point, its not a big deal. I am now using MusicBee exclusively but still have my J River Media Centre 12 (free) installed until I make a final decision on MB, so I can use that to sync the iPod.

Steven,

Probably not, but don't remember for sure. If I did it was six years
ago, so even that may not have been sufficient.

Thanks for the quick reply, and if I decide to run iTunes and it does
(or doesn't!) fix the problem I'll update this thread.
