Thank you so much for this program! You help me a lot.

Only three wishes or help required:
1. Please make it possible to save the rating of a song in the file tag. It is now only saved in the MusicBee Database, right? Is there any other way to convert it, so that I can use the rating I give the song in MusicBee is available in every other music player?

2. The option with the custom music tags is beautiful. I could use more than 5 and I would find it better, if I can also create new custom tags, not only use unused standard tags.

3. Now I´ve tried around a little. I use for example the Tag "WWW Artist" with my display name "Emotion". I fill in something, save it. Now when I close and reopen the file in MusicBee, it shows my entry. If I open the file in for example TagIt or Mp3tag, the field is not shown or empty. Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you,

Christoph

you are right and your request is possible. The reason i havent done it so far is that different music players use different rating numbering schemes eg. media monkey has a different scheme to windows media player. Also i believe they recently changed it again although i havent looked into that.
So to implement this, i would probably use the windows media player scheme to get widest support but that would mean 1/2 ratings would need to be rounded, although i havent looked at how foobar works
2. The option with the custom music tags is beautiful. I could use more than 5 and I would find it better, if I can also create new custom tags, not only use unused standard tags.
as it happens i was thinking about adding the ability to define your own tags that are saved to a file - i am looking at tagging at the moment but probably wont have anything done until next weekend. I can probably add more custom tags but before i commit to that i want to think about how i could implement in the input screen as space will be an issue (i will probably implement a scrollable panel on the second tags tab)
3. Now I´ve tried around a little. I use for example the Tag "WWW Artist" with my display name "Emotion". I fill in something, save it. what file format is it (MP3, flac, etc) ? sounds like a bug
edit:
i did a test and it seems you need to restart MB before the changed preference takes effect ie. if you didnt restart MB, the new custom tag would only have been saved to the musicbee database. I'll fix that

Hi Steven.

This was fast... Thank you.

I only work with mp3.

The WMP Rating would be fine for me. I read somewhere, that it can handle values from 1-255, so you could calculate a 4.5 into 230. But I´m not sure about that...

Looking forward to fully customizable tags.

The third topic somehow solved itself. I don´t know what happened but now it works...

If I can help you (for example with a german translation) please tell me...

Christoph

I thought I've opened a similar topic in the Wishlist section, but obviously I've forgotten to press the "post" button :)
I would also like to have more then 5 customizable tags stored in the file. I prefer other formats than mp3, but that should be fine, because defining of custom tags in APE and VorbisComment tags should be even easier as they are allowed by these tag types.
Steven, could you also add a button (probably also in the second tags tab) that list all metadata in a flying window, as a table perhaps? Or maybe you will have some other idea?
Anyhow, the direct editing of all tags at ones would be a good feature, I believe.

the defineable custom tags for retrieval/ storage in music files will be for all supported file formats
i am already looking at displaying all tags in a file as a grid, although still havent decided how to implement the display just yet, and whether i will initially support editing the 'unknown' tags (mainly due to ID3 tags making things more complicated)

the latest 1.1 beta (see the 1.1 beta topic) includes the ability to define new custom tags that can be saved/ retrieved to/ from a file, 4 extra custom tag fields (9 in total) and saving ratings to the music file

Hi Steven!

Thanks a lot again. I´ve sorted my Music with MusicBee and I´m a big fan of your programme. It sometimes just shuts down without warning and error message but that´s pretty seldom. If I find out more about that I´ll tell you.

I tried around a little with the ratings. Now they are saved in the MediaMonkey-Rating Tag. That´s fine with me. I tried to rate a song, see the difference in the Tag (I use Mp3Tag for that). It worked. I rated the same song differently - no change in the tag according to mp3tag. Closing MB and mp3tag before trying it again didn´t work. The change is saved in MB though... Seems like the same problem I already had with the custom tags (see my first entry).

Have a nice weekend,

Christoph

can you send me your errorlog (View/ Error Log) - it might have some info on why its shutting down

when checking with mp3Tag, make sure you click the refresh button in mp3Tag if you have it open when you change the rating in MB

That´s weird... I did use the refresh button before. What I found out: If I only change the Rating in MB it won´t be changed in mp3tag. If I change another tag (artist) as well, it is also changed in mp3tag.

those are all old errors which i've already provided a fix for - so unfourtantely doesnt help with why MB shuts down. If you see any pattern please let me know. I have a feeling it might be because the error handling is not correctly trapping a particular error but it would be useful to know what you did when it happens.

regarding the rating, how are you changing the rating? right click, Rating; click on the main panel; or click on the player panel?
if you are changing the rating in the tag editor panel i think i know what it might be though

we´re getting there.

The rating is shown right in mp3tag if I rate the song directly in the rating column of the library view (that´s the main panel I guess) or via right click (in the main or player panel).
It is not changed, if I rate it in the TagEditor, that I have opened at the bottom of the page.

Now it gets strange: If I rate a song five stars via right click, mp3tag doesn´t show any entry "Rating MM" at all. It´s vanished...

In any other case, the entry is shown two times. The value for two stars in mp3tag would then be for example "2\\2"

ok, i'll fix the tag editor rating

for rating scales, for some reason that doesnt make any sense to me, MediaMonkey decided to use 252 for the 5 rating and not 255 which is what windows media player uses. They changed some of their other ratings to be compatible with WMP but not 5.
I've decided to go with 255.
I think you will find it shows as 5 in MediaMonkey but just not in mp3Tag which is looking for 252 (mp3Tag should be showing an entry called POPM for it)
Not sure why mp3Tag is showing the rating twice - could you send me a file so i can see what is going on. I'll PM you my email address

I send you the file.

I think I need a tag viewer programme that just shows every entry as it is (not trying to convert the entrys like mp3tag). Do you know one?

The rating isn´t shown in mp3tag. I can´t find a tag called POPM or Popularimeter there.

no - i would have recommended mp3Tag
however what you are wanting is actually something i am going to do shortly anyway - i've already started with the new 'tag grid' button in the tag editor (might rename that!) but at the moment its just the abstracted view of the tags
