is-it possible to have an auto-complete function for the "role/instrument" text fields in the "multiple artist splitter" window?

... for the classic music, sometimes it's time consuming to fill repeatedly the role/instrument of a particuliar singer, orchestra or ensemble, director,...

thank you so much for your so well done application!

I'm pretty certain the multiple artist splitter already functions in such a manner.

Out of curiosity (since I'm preparing a post on the tags involved in the Multiple Artist Splitter ... stay tuned), I have performed some systematic tests in the Multiple Artist Splitter dialog box.

These are the possible options I've recorded:

display artist + button [Split]
  • roles/instruments are NOT recognised in this text box (at least not with these separators: = : (...) {...} [...] as)
  • artists can be separated by: , ; / ) & and ft. feat. featuring v. vs. with

artist: role/instrument (TEXT mode)
  • you must separate the artists by a newline
  • artist names and instruments are parsed correctly when separated by a colon (e.g. John Smith: guitar)

artist: role/instrument (GRID mode)
  • select in the drop-down list between (Artist/Guest Artist/Performer/Remixer)
  • or type the exact role/instrument you wish (such as guitar)
  • or type a part of it (such as gui), then select from the drop-down list,
provided the role/instrument you wish is
    - either included in Configuration.xml, between <Instruments>...</Instruments>
    - or already present in some other track.

EDIT:
re-added the separator list removed by the forum editor (bug showing up with nested lists)
artists can be separated by: , ; / ) & and ft. feat. featuring v. vs. with

Again, great work!
This is consistent with what I have experienced. @beetoo, is this what you are referring to?

Is it at all possible for "-" recognised as a separator between artist : role in the tag splitter? sites like Wikipedia mainly use it so once you paste your list in, you still need to correct it so the artists : roles split correctly in grid Mode.
if not then no dramas whatsoever, just a thought.

cheers for this awesome program.

I am guessing that might be problematic for e.g. Jean-Luc Picard playing the twelve-string guitar?
How is Wikipedia/Wikidata handling such cases?

edit
Hm, probably [space]-[space]
Then it might be possible to do.

Ahhh yes that was poorly structured on my behalf. cheers for the correction!

It would probably also be useful to users copying such performers info from Discogs.
The complication there being that when musicians are credited for more than one instrument, there will also be one or more commas involved.

@The Incredible Boom Boom, it's not really what I was pointed.
I'd like the program to remember the last "role/instrument" <value> manually entered by the user for a given "artist", so that if the "artist" come back, the "role/instrument" value is auto-completed.

I think that sort of functionality would require a lot of effort from both the developer as well as MB itself for very little benefit. It would require it to store every artist/role variation in the configuration file which would very quickly run into the thousands for people with large library's. You're then expecting MB to search through those thousands of entries to find an artist, and when that particular artist is credited with multiple roles/instruments across half a dozen different bands, how would it decide which specific role to "auto-complete?
