Hi Everyone!  :D

Greatly appreciated for any help here with this.

I have all my music sorted by genre in folders (Classical, Rock, Jazz, Reggae, Electronic, etc)..
I use mp3tag to create the sub-genres for each folder,
such as Classical Music folder contains albums/tracks marked as Baroque Era, Galante Era, Classical, etc.

My questions is:
For the Musicbee Music Browser,
Can i create custom sidebar links, dropdown links, or tabs to focus on a particular music folder?
That way I can look alphabetically, etc. thru 1 genre, instead of looking  at all 4 TB of music all at once
from my collection?

I have spent sometime looking thru the software menu and KB, and the forum.
Perhaps I am not looking in the right place or missed something?
Thanks again for any help,

Jeff:)

I wonder why you use the file structure.
If you populate the Genre tag, you can easily filer by genre.

If you insist on using the file system, expand the Computer node.
You can use this view to browse any folder of choice.

Thanks Vincent for your quick reply!

I have my genres (thru mp3tag) using the exact sub-genre for that particular music genre folder.

The list of tagging offered in  musicbee,
doesn't cover the sub-genres I am using even with advance tagging;
I use subgenres thru a musicological grouping of time periods and styles.
Thus I have organized 25,000 Classical tracks alone..

The MB tagging may perform well for Rock and Jazz,
Yet Reggae & Classical, MBs sub-genres are a little different from mine.
As well I have music from the African Continent grouped by country.

So computer node is the only way? With no possibllity of creating custom tabs or menus within the music browser?

Jeff :)

I can't imagine a system relying on folders working well for this.

In what folder do you place Ethiopean jazz?
In a folder named Ethiopea, or in a folder named Jazz? (or maybe in Ethno-jazz?)
What are your criteria for creating either a 'genre' folder or a 'country' folder?
And what if an album contains tracks from artists from different African countries, or if you have an album that contains music of different genres. Will you split up the album and put all it's tracks in different folders?

In general I would say: whatever system works for you works for you.
But MusicBee (just as any advanced music managing software) is designed to make the most of properly tagged files.
You can have tags for country, language, genre, subgenre, etc. etc.
The possibilities for filtering, grouping, creating playlists etc. will then be near endless.

You could never do the same using just folders.
While there may be some ways to navigate using folders, MusicBee was never designed for such a purpose.

I don't understand your problem
You use MP3tag to populate the genre tag  and Musicbee will read its value.
You can use Musicbee's list of genres but you are not forced to do so.
In fact as I'm not interested in genre at all, I use it for "Solo", "Duo", Trio, etc.

I  believe Musicbee even supports multiple values in the genre tag allow for schema like "Baroque"; "Baroque (Early)" etc.

Thanks Hiccup & Vincent for that clarity! :D

I want to use MB for my organizer and player.
I was using music collectorz for the longest time,
but MB is a sleeker, easier to manage software that I need to get my mind around better to
work with mp3tag if possible.

I guess what i need to know how to do is create custom tagging for several levels.
i.e. (for what doesnt exist)
Mp3tag only has the one genre field I know of without a subgenre
that MB could pick up on on import.

Classical==> Galante Era (1700-1730)==>(Composer) would be the deepest level in classical.
Reggae==>Roots==>Dub==>(Band Name)
Africa==>Ethiopia==>Jazz==>(Band Name)
Africa==> Nigeria==>AfroBeat==>(Band Name)
Rock==>Classic Rock==>(Band Name)

Jeff :)

I myself am using MusicBrainz' Picard for that, and there are many topics to be found on our forum on how to use Picard, and make it play nice together with MusicBee. Also where it concerns genres.

There are also a lot of MusicBee users that use mp3tag, but I don't think a lot of information about that is to be found on our forum.
So it's probably best to ask these questions on the mp3tag forum?

Very simple, open a track in Musicbee (Edit)
In the Tag panel, select Genre
Now you have a multiple line dialog
Enter
Classical
Galante Era (1700-1730)

This the way to create multiple values.
Composer I would put into  the composer tag

Observe multiple values doesn't  mean multiple genre fields but 1 field with multiple values with a separator in between
.You might try Classical;Galante Era (1700-1730) in MP3tag using a ; as a separator.
