There used to be the option to have the different panels linked so all of them would simultaneously display either 'playing' or 'selected'.
I am not able to find that setting at the moment.
Am I overlooking it, or could it be that it has been removed?

There's no option and I'm pretty sure there never was. It's a toggle.
Click on "playing" and it becomes "selected." Click on "selected" and it becomes "playing."
Download the latest MusicBee v3.5 or 3.6 patch from here.
Unzip into your MusicBee directory and overwrite existing files.

In 3.0 it was under Layout (1):

Well I'll be damned.

But from your screenshot, it looks like Layout (1) > general and not "top-level" General. Not that it matters as it certainly appears to be gone.

It looks like the option was not just moved somewhere I can't find, but it was completely removed indeed, since the entry for it that used to be in MusicBee3Settings.ini  is now also gone.
I'm going to create a wish to have it back.

Click on "playing" and it becomes "selected." Click on "selected" and it becomes "playing."

Just to be sure to explain what the feature that has been removed did:

Suppose you have separate panels such as e.g. Track information, Album cover, Vertical tag editor positioned somewhere in your layout.
This 'synchronise panels' feature allowed for having all of them linked with respect to them displaying info about either the 'selected' or the 'now playing' track.

Now that that feature is gone, you will need to set each panel separately for what you want it to show.

note:
I have noticed I couldn't set this a while ago already, but chalked it down to me being forgetful about where the setting was, and being too lazy to research it better.
To be honest, it's a bit surprising to me that nobody else reported this very useful option having been removed either over the last couple of years.

I'm sure you're aware of this, or at least experimented with it, but my reference above to choosing "selected" or "playing" is indeed synchronized between all relevant panels. I recognize that you're looking for an option to enable syncing those two modes, but it is already synced. Perhaps that's why the now-missing option was removed.

I have these panels showing: Track Details, Lyrics, Artwork, and Bio. All have a button that says either "Selected" or "Playing." Changing one changes them all.

Or am I misunderstanding what you're trying to accomplish with an option in Preferences?

It doesn't for me:
(click the thumbnail to see live action)

What also catches my eye is that at the right side of the header bar of the panels it shows either 'Playing' or 'Selected'.
And this is how it has been for a long time.
But I've also observed installations where it will only show 'Selected' (in brackets), but nothing if you have set it to 'Playing'.

So something regarding that may also have been changed some moment in time?
At the moment I have two different portable installs that each show different behaviour regarding this, and both indicate to be version 3.5.8167

Not sure what is going on with all this.

Interesting.

I'm thinking the problem is with the Vertical Tag Editor (VTW.) It seems when it's not in focus, changing the other selected/playing buttons does not change the button in the VTE. Yet changing it in the VTE causes the others to stay in sync. (I don't use the VTE and I'm too lazy to get up and go to my PC to try it.)

Methinks it's for Steven to look at.

And which type of 'Playing'/'Selected' indicator do you have in the header bars?
The one from the gif, or the one from the small screenshot?

I'm assuming you are also on 3.5.8167?

The type in the headers. And yes - same MB version.

Sorry, but both versions are in the header:
Do you have the one also showing 'Playing' at the far right side, or have it only showing when 'Selected' in brackets in the middle?
(gif vs. small screenshot)

I thought I had replied a number of hours ago, but I don't see it.

Mine looks like your GIF. I have never seen 'selected' or 'playing' enclosed in brackets as in your small screenshot. That could be due to my having two Track Information panels stacked.

That doesn't seem to be it.
This is what 'stacked' looks like on one of my installs:

I think I'm going to wait until v3.5 final is released before I put more effort in investigating this (and another) issue.

Hm, a thought came up: the different looks may depend on what skin is used.
Maybe that also affects panels synchronising or not?
I'll test that this weekend.
