With the playlist node open in the left sidebar navigator, hovering over a playlist shows a popup with the total number of tracks, the total file size, and the total time of that playlist.

I feel it would be more convenient, and helpful, to have each playlist display the total number of tracks contained therein. One could then tell at a glance how many tracks there are in a given playlist. If the user wants more information, they could then hover and get the same information as shown currently.

This is the way playlists appear in Subsonic/Airsonic

Download the latest MusicBee v3.5 or 3.6 patch from here.
Unzip into your MusicBee directory and overwrite existing files.

The reason it was done the way its been implemented is because it would take quite some time to open all the playlists and get the tracks counts.
You can also see the track count in the playlist header bar if you have that enabled

Ahhh ... yes, that makes sense.

Thanks for the tip about the playlist header. I hadn't been using that. Still not as convenient as glancing down a list to see the counts, but I can live with it.
