Sorry that's right it is built in.  I don't know whether that's true about the link being "fake" or if it's just old and unnecessary.

That now built in feature has the option to fetch last played time and play count  for each track from last.fm and write them to your musicbee database and then keep it in sync. How is that not exactly what you were asking here?

Write in the file... not only in the database.

You could easily use custom tags for that.  I know there's a tutorial on how to do that for date last played here on the forum, and I imagine the same concepts would apply to play count.

Edit: I had it backward - the tutorial is for play count.
