Hi, I have been trying to find a clear explanation but so far I am still confused.
When "store ratings in the music file" is checked, how is the rating stored in the file? When it is unchecked, where is the rating stored and what happens to any existing "in the file" rating? Where is the heart/love/favorite selection stored and does this also change?

If I start playing a music file and select "3 stars" and then look in the tag editor there is no RATING or similar tag to be found. The window shows "track and album rating" info separately. What is this if not an ID3 tag? Why isn't the heart/fave status shown here as well?

Ratings are stored in the POPM tag for MP3 files. Only Steven would know for sure what happens if you change that setting, but I would expect MusicBee wouldn't do anything to existing tags, just ignore them.

I believe love/ban is a database only tag unless you're syncing to last.fm. I thought I remembered a guide in Tips and Tricks on how to save that in a file, but I might have it confused with something else.

There was some discussion about storage of ratings here, which is probably relevant to your questions

The love/ban status is now saved to file. I wasnt always like that but i think it was changed a few years ago now.

That's interesting, I wasn't aware of the change. Does the function "Sync last.fm loved tracks" also save to the track itself or it is only manually loved tracks that do so?

To answer my own question, "Sync last.fm loved tracks" does not save the love tag to the track itself
