3rd attempt to reply, apologies if they all appear together like buses.
Nothing in my Inbox.

Do the problematic files or folders perhaps contain non-standard characters?

And,
Are you sure they do contain valid metadata for artist, title etc.?
Else they might display invisible depending on your panel settings.

There aren't any non-standard characters.
In file explorer the 'Contributing artist' and 'Album' are all labelled Unkown, this may well be the problem but I don't know how to remedy this.
OK I've just clicked on Tools>Tagging Tools>Show files with missing tags.  Bingo they're there or at least some of them, whatever I've got a way forward.
Many thanks for your help and to Sveakul and Phread.

Great.
You can also get them in view if you have your main panel set to 'Tracks', and set columns such as 'URL' or '.Ext'.

Yeah I didn't even think of them not having tags!  In addition to hiccup's "set diplayed field" recommendations, choosing "filename" would also have done the trick.

We should make sure that gets added to the upcoming 'MusicBee's Ultimate Resource of Common Questions, Issues and Problems, and their Answers and Solutions' board…
