Often times when I download a background to use for MusicBee I find that its too bright, too dark, too much contrast, etc... So I use a free program that is like Photoshop to edit my background images the way I like for use in MusicBee.

The app is called GIMP, you can get it here.

If you select the color tab, there are all sorts of tools you can use to edit your image. One that is easy to use is the Brightness/Contrast tool. I also like to mess with the levels and saturation of the colours.

GIMP is great. I took a Photoshop class last year. I cheated on one assignment and used Gimp's selective color-to-transparency  tool as a short cut.

I've used it a lot in scanning cover art for MusicBrainz. There's a plug in that's helpful for eliminating moire patterns in high res scans.
