There are various columns offered for display in the playlist.

One of them is a checkmark/tick column which contains a checkmark or is empty.

I like this for some purposes.
But I want to be sure that it has no side effects.

Does this checkmark has a special meaning or is just a checkmark?

Can I assign a checkmark value to other columns as well (e.g.to "custom1")?

I don't *think* the check mark does anything by itself, but I can't swear to it.  I use it to exclude tracks from syncing, but that's with a filter I made.

There isn't a custom tag format that is just the checkbox, sorry.  I would just make a text or enumerated field and enter Y/N or something like that.

It doesn't have any permanent affect on your files, if that's what you're wondering.

From (distant) memory it was implemented to replicate something that existed in iTunes, so people could select lots of tracks for whatever reason without worrying that one misplaced mouse click would undo their entire selection.

This thread from when it was given an overhaul might be helpful:

Or this one when it was first implemented 8 years ago:

Ok, thank you.
One more related question:

I tried to move the checkmark column from the first, left-most position to the mid resp. the right-end of the playlist table.

But this does not work (as for the other columns).

Is this "special" checkmark column unmoveable tied tot the first position?

Yes, the position is fixed
