Hello,

I'm trying to group the albums by Various Artists in the same series. But problem is the field that I am using to group is blank for other albums so they all get grouped in one category as 'Unknown Grouping'. Is there any way around that, like albums with that certain field empty just not get grouped at all?

Thanks.

Where are you using/displaying the grouping?

In that particular situation, not directly. It has to categorize them somehow. You could look at using a virtual tag that gives an alternative you want to use for regular tracks

Ah good, I just created a virtual tag to get rid of the empty fields and it is actually alright. But was just wondering, is there a different solution of this was on another panel?

In some places, like file naming, you could use a function like $IsNull(<Grouping>,,<Grouping>) to just blank it out.

If you don't use <Sort Artist>, you could set the Thumbnail Browser to use <Sort Artist> and then change <Sort Artist> in your "Various Artist" albums to how you want them grouped together. By default, <Sort Artist> contains <Artist> (unless you've filled it with "Last Name, First Name"), so your other tags will retain their same structure. You'll get to save a Virtual Tag this way and can use <Grouping> for something that's not as easily remedied.

This is how I group "Various Artist" compilations.

Quote
<Sort Artist> Relic Records
<Artist> The Orchids
*<Album Artist>
<Album> The Golden Era of Doowoops: The Groups of Parrot Records Part One

<Sort Artist> Relic Records
<Artist> The Flamingos
*<Album Artist>
<Album> The Golden Era of Doowoops: The Groups of Parrot Records Part One

And so on

.....................

<Sort Artist> Relic Records
<Artist> The Flamingos
*<Album Artist>
<Album> The Golden Era of Doowoops: The Groups of Parrot Records Pt. 2

<Sort Artist> Relic Records
<Artist> The Fascinators
*<Album Artist>
<Album> The Golden Era of Doowoops: The Groups of Parrot Records Pt. 2

And so on

* I leave <Album Artist> blank and enable the "iTunes compilation" flag, which categorizes albums as "Various Artist," but without needing to write it to the <Album Artist> tag.
