In Album & Tracks view (both compact and regular versions), you can select an album by clicking the artwork or album header. You can use ctrl + click to select multiple albums the same way. However, you can only use shift-select if you click on individual tracks. Otherwise it just changes the selection from the first album you clicked to the last.
It seems like you should be able to select multiple albums by holding shift and clicking the artwork or album header, too.
