Sub-genre categories

For example, if I have the general genre as "Jazz" and I want to organize them by a sub-genre, like be-bop, swing, fusion, etc., but not create a whole new genre category.  This can be added to the Edit>Tags popup.

How is this different from treating Jazz as a genre category and assigning those genres to it?
