"Disc 1" why?

Some albums in my collection show "Disc 1" below the album title even though I have blanked the Discnumber tag. Why? Is there some other tag that is causing this to happen?

I suggest you take a look at one of the files with the Tag Inspector to see if you see the Disc 1 tag there. Also check customize panel settings to see what tag it's looking for there.
