I just realized that MusicBee is automatically setting the Album Artist as the same thing as the Artist on songs that have an empty tag there. Is there a way to disable this?

Hi, welcome to the forum!

There's not a way to disable it, although if you're dealing with, say, compilation tracks you can use the "iTunes compilation" flag and the preferences for Sorting/Grouping to change how musicbee handles blank album artist tags.

Should probably note that (as far as I know) it isn't "setting" anything.  It just displays the Artist for the Album Artist when the latter is blank.  Nothing is "set."

That has occasionally been sending me on the wrong track, and slightly bugging me too, and I agree that at least the option to have MusicBee showing actual values should be there.

It seems Steven at that time considered adding the option allowing for showing them as they are.
I'm not sure why that didn't happen. (yet?)

For now, you could try creating a virtual tag for that purpose.
