Search library from another application

Is there a way to get MB to search the library via the API, and send some related value back to that application?

I'm toying with the idea of a Chrome extension that lets you search the library with the selected text without having to switch back to the app and paste it into the box.

I download a lot from Bandcamp and my library is pretty big (420k+) so I often download things I already have. BC doesn't show it as purchased if its a free/name your price and you didn't opt to pay something.

For my own use I wouldn't even need to see the actual results, just how many there are so I can judge if I do / don't have something already.
