After much bafflement and clicking around I finally found the way to clear the Library Explorer selection: click the Library Explorer header. Not obvious.
Most trees/lists permit control-click as a way to unselect the current entry, please add the same functionality to Library Explorer: control-click on a selected entry unselects it.
