I found an interesting description of the 21 embedded image tag options available for the ID3 2.3 standard here:

http://www.richardfarrar.com/alternative-id3-tags-for-adding-artwork-to-mp3-files/

The best part is a small MP3 file that actually contains all 21 images, labelled as per tag type, so you can test a player's support for each image tag type (right-click link and choose "save link/target as"):

Many people like to embed more than one picture type into their MP3's, and the ID3 v2 standard allows for that, defining a set of picture types and their respective descriptors (http://id3.org/id3v2.3.0#Attached_picture).  Music players can then use this information from the tag to properly display/label more than one image or a selected image type while playing the file.

But is it worth it? How many people feel compelled to see a portrait of the sound engineer while listening to a track...
Anyway, everybody can do as he pleases...
My considerations would be:
Even if the files are all small they still add up to more kbs which is never good on a portable device.
Embedding would also mean that each file of an album would carry all these pictures which is a major drawback.
Just now I have extracted big artwork - ie album covers - and reduced their file size to a maximum of 150kb. After re-embedding them I still have 8MB less - per MP3-album! Good for portable devices.
