MusicBee defaults to using the Windows 7/10 AAC codec when playing AAC/M4A; as has been stated by many others before, those with problems using that solution (esp. with Windows 10) can download the bass_aac.dll from www.un4seen.com, drop that into the MB folder and restart.  MusicBee will then default to that plugin for AAC/M4A.

Just wanted to note here that the latest bass_aac.dll version is not necessarily in the "bass_aac24.zip" package from the link at the normal un4seen web site (http://www.un4seen.com/download.php?z/2/bass_aac24), but may reside at http://www.un4seen.com/stuff/bass_aac.zip, until the last "in development" version is moved to the "regular" address.

The BASS developer has stated that plugin versions available at the www.un4seen.com/stuff/* address ".. are 'in development' updates that are made available between releases. They are still "release" builds and usually fine for production use."

The latest bass_aac.dll is now 2.4.6.2, dated 2024-01-30, and is now at https://www.un4seen.com/stuff/bass_aac.zip .

Out of curiosity, what is the difference between using the windows decoder and using the bass decoder? Is there an audible change in the quality of the playback?

I have to admit I've no clue when it comes any of these.

Hi tom white:  There's no reason to use the bass_aac.dll instead of the built-in Windows Media Foundation one that MusicBee defaults to without that dll's presence, unless:

1)  You are experiencing problems playing AAC/M4A files--some flavors of Windows 10 have had issues;

2)  You play AAC/M4A files with a sample rate greater than 48khz--the Windows AAC decoder will not play sample rates higher than 48khz, bass_aac.dll will.

Thanks for that answer. I did the download and had not really heard a difference myself. However, I don't have many files in that format (mine are mainly FLAC and MP3), so I wasn't sure. And no, I've never had a problem playing AAC files with just the windows decoder.

Thanks again.

SOLVED

I landed here via the thread regarding the problems with AAC streams and installed the 2.4.5.21 from 2021-04-23. Some streams now run with it, albeit partly very limited, others not at all. Absolute Radio runs flawlessly via VLC, with MusicBee does there unfortunately still nothing at all.

Do others have better experience or other ideas in this regard?

//EDIT: Absolute Radio works with MusicBee without https
