Some displayed tag frames get automatically populated by MusicBee when they are in fact empty.
Such is the case with 'album artist', 'sort composer' etc. They will be populated and displayed, even if the tags are empty.
(I'm personally not a big fan of that, but that's me)

In some cases I find it confusing, and I thought in the past I had some solution by means of using a virtual tag.

I just tried that again with something simple like:
virtual tag name: Sort Composer (v)
formula: $IsNull(<Sort Composer>,,<Sort Composer>)

But that will always populate the Sort Composer in the same manner, so not showing empty when the actual tag frame is also empty.
(which of course kind of makes sense the way virtual tags work)

How can I accomplish a virtual tag displaying the factual content of such tag frames?

I think you are right, but it must have changed with the introduction of the Sorting tab in the editor.

Filters and auto-playlists work for identifying tracks that do not contain album artist or sort composer values. But they don't work for other sort tags.
