Setting a custom sort order for composer doesn't work?

I am trying to set a Custom Sort value for composers.

E.g. instead of getting sort value: "Bach, Johann Sebastian" for "Johann Sebastian Bach", I would like to set it to be "Bach, J.S.".

I was assuming that you could use the feature 'custom sort value for individual performers and composers' for that.
So I entered the "Bach, J.S." under 'sort as'.

Yet, I can't find this new sorting preference showing up anywhere at all.
Both existing files, and newly added ones all get the old "Bach, Johann Sebastian" sorting name.

Is this a bug, or am I misunderstanding how this feature works?

For v3.2, i have made the setting available in the tag editor panel so its more obvious
