Understanding lyrics

I have a track where the displayed lyrics are wrong

Going to Edit and looking at the Lyrics tab for that song it is empty so I presume lyrics are coming from an external source.

If I put my own lyrics in the tab will it overide the downloaded version or not?

Yes, if you save them to the file it will take priority over the download.  Look at Tags (2) in preferences to adjust the auto-download settings.
