MB v3.0.5919; Microsoft Windows 7

I always had "include total track count" unchecked.  Also, my files do not contain any tag fields such as <TOTALTRACKS>.  When editing <YEAR> on a 12-track album in MB, I noticed afterwards (with mp3tag) that the album track numbers went from "##" -> "##/12" (i.e. "01" -> "01/12").

Going by standards set out by id3.org (http://id3.org/d3v2.3.0):
Quote
TRCK
The 'Track number/Position in set' frame is a numeric string containing the order number of the audio-file on its original recording. This may be extended with a "/" character and a numeric string containing the total numer (sic) of tracks/elements on the original recording. E.g. "4/9".
(emphasis added)

Under the v2.4.0 spec (http://id3.org/id3v2.4.0-frames), "may" is capitalized, further signifying that the appended total number of tracks is optional rather than a standard.
