i think so - i havent tested and dont have time now but it should use the same internal functions to retrieve artist pictures that this has been implemented for. You just wont be able to ban them from the theatremode itself.
The cache you refer to is shared with the Playing Track artist picture and its used for the primary picture only. You can only ban web links, not the primary picture already cached
