MusicBee Wishlist / A couple of small behavioural changes
« on: February 24, 2017, 09:07:30 PM »
Just a couple of small behavioural changes that would be nice to have.

Ability to use multiple key strokes in the Scan folders for new files > Choose folders… dialog

Currently, if you stroke several keys in this dialog (no matter how fast) it will change from the first folder starting with the first key to the first folder starting with the second key (example: press B goes to BADBADNOTGOOD, press R goes to Radiohead) instead of going to the first folder starting “Br”, as the thumbnail browser does.

Make the Now playing bar > Track information aligned to the top, not the bottom

Currently, this element is aligned to the bottom, causing the visual lost of the more relevant part of the information (where most of us, I guess, have it). Example:

As can be seen, the Now playing bar shows only the bottom of the track details (visible in the panel on the right), but it will be more useful to have the top of the information visible. Maybe even add a scroll bar to the right of the artist picture…

Bug Reports / Multiple Sort Album Artist not recognized properly
« on: February 07, 2017, 07:07:32 PM »
Consists in:
Those artists who appear in a multi-value <Sort Album Artist> tag, though showing properly in the thumbnail browser, show an empty Main Panel.

Happens when:
  • in the Music tab
  • having the thumbnail browser set to “Sort Album Artist”

Notes:
  • It works fine for <Album Artist>
  • It works fine for <Sort Album Artist> with just one value
  • MB version: 3.1.6246

3
Consists in:
  • Hotkeys does not work (e.g. ctrl+a just makes the panel lose focus)
  • Commands to selected tracks do nothing (edit tracks, etc.)
  • Send to library command produce an error to be reported
Happens when:
  • In Now Playing tab
  • Main panel is Theater Mode
  • Playing Tracks is in the Now Playing sidebar
Error report
This is the report generated while trying to “send to library” from the Playing Tracks panel under the above circumstances

Questions / Why does MB convert custom id3 tags to all-capitals?
« on: February 02, 2017, 06:58:25 PM »
Is there a specific reason why MB convert custom id3 tags to all-capitals?

I’m currently having troubles of consistency because of this. I use several custom tags sourced from MusicBrainz Picard, but each time I edit any tag in MB all these are converted to all-caps, so if then I try to update my tags with Picard, they are not recognized and are written again in mixed-case, and then MB read them as a split tag (one, the old all-caps, and another, the newly written mixed-caps). So I end up with something like this.

This is very annoying to me.

You can use mixed-caps custom tags in every(?) other tag format, so, why can’t you with id3? It doesn’t seem to be part of the standard (neither for v2.3 or v2.4).

I would like to know if there’s a reason before making a petition for this to change.

MusicBee Wishlist / Move the placement of highlight in Album Covers view
« on: November 29, 2016, 03:09:22 PM »
Hello everyone:

Just a little suggestion regarding the highlight field while in Album Covers view. If you display the rating, then the highlight will show at the left of it. This is not a problem if you have all your tracks rated:

But if you don’t, it would look a little strange:

So, I suggest to change the placement of the highlight column to the right of the rating one (or to the left of the track number) (which I would personally prefer) or to align the highlight column to the left if even one song is rated, so they remain visually consistent.

That’s all, thanks for your attention.

Questions / Limit the amount of space used in a portable device
« on: August 10, 2016, 09:24:53 PM »
I have a phone and I'd like to randomly “fill it”, but don't want to use all my storage with music. Is there a way to tell MB to only take a certain amount of GB when doing this?

Questions / Filter library by songs not on a certain playlist
« on: June 17, 2016, 02:49:14 AM »
I wonder if there’s a way to create a filter for the library (or a playlist that includes every track on the library and…) that excludes only the songs in a certain playlist.

I have a playlist with the sole purpose to put in there the albums that I want to transfer to my portable device. I would like to view which albums are not in that playlist (and therefore neither on my iPod) so I can add new albums without check everytime if they are alredy there, or have to deal with the duplicate dialogue (sometimes there are live or alternate versions that may seem duplicates, but aren't).

Thanks in advance.

Questions / «fields to define an album» not working properly
« on: June 01, 2016, 03:18:10 AM »
I have a virtual tag that I wanted to use to define an album, so I edite the settings; the problem is, it works with some albums and not others, and I don't know why.

This image shows it working as expected, grouping otherwise identical <Album Artist> and <Album> tags (the <Disc Subtitle> tag is empty).

But in this other album, it simply doesn't work, even though the corresponding column shows that MB recognizes the difference that should be grouping them separately.

Any idea of how to work this out? Is it maybe a bug?

Questions / MB takes ENSEMBLE to mean Album Artist, How can I prevent this?
« on: February 05, 2016, 07:31:48 PM »
It seems that, when dealing with FLAC (Vorbis) tags, MB assumes that ENSEMBLE means ALBUM ARTIST.

Here’s the problem: You may have (as I do) a compilation album (or a live album, etc) in which the propper album artist is Various Artists, and also some of these songs may have the tag for the ensemble that performed in the recording (not the same for all tracks). This will cause MB to assign to some tracks “Various Artists” as album artist (via the ALBUMARTIST tag) and “Various Artists; Some Ensamble” to those that also have an ENSEMBLE tag.
This will break the album, specially if you have Album Artist as your first sort key.

How can I prevent MB from including ENSAMBLE as Album Artists and, if possible, make it include it in Musician Credits List instead?

Questions / Help regarding the year tag dispaly format
« on: August 12, 2014, 08:34:46 PM »
Suddenly, MB (2.3.5133, portable) has begun to format the year tag in my mp3 files. Whereas before it was yyyy-mm-dd; now it is dd/mm/yyyy.
I haven’t done any change to MB, but I just update my OS from win7 to win8.1, so I’m guessing it has to do with it.
My FLAC and m4a files, however, still show the date as usual (all my mp3 tags are in ID3v2.4). All the files newly added has this new format, while those already in library had to be re-scanned to display it.

This breaks my configuration because I have a virtual <earliest date> tag that compares <original year> to <year> in order to get the earliest release event, that tag helps me deal with re-issues, foreign releases, special editions released after the original, etc. and I use it for all my chronological sortings, but now it’s broken for those files with that new year format.
Is there a way to tell MB to keep using the old, more convenient (IMHO) format? And if not, is there a way to implement it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi. I like very much the ability to group the Album and Tracks view by a given tag. Currently, the behaviour implies that every grouping field means a new album. So, I propouse that an option exists to indicate that a given group doesn’t break an album, but is a tracklist heading. I’ll explain myself:

There are the SETSUBTITLE and the GROUPING tags that indicate a disc subtitle and a group of tracks in an album, respectively. When I try to make them show up in the library (in the Album and Tracks view settings), this will only shows them for the first track, so, I have them set in the grouping preferences. This however, shows me this

Including an option to make the GROUPING tag a tracklist heading instead of an album break, will move it from alongside the album cover to the tracklist like this

And something alike for the SETSUBTITLE:

It would be ideal that for every new heading, MB check if the tags for display in the left area are the same that those in the first, so it can display again those that differ (being album art or not).

For example, this is an album with an special edition (with bonus tracks and different cover).

And this is an album with the same cover but with tracks from a different edition (a japanese one).

And other with different cover and edition.

I hope not have been too redundant with the pictures, just not sure if the idea was clearly expressed (sorry for my english, by the way).

I think this may be implemented with a checkbox alongside the fields in the sorting/grouping settings (and maybe there a custom font option).

So, what do you think? Anyone also wanting something like this?

MusicBee Wishlist / Re-format tag’s when transfering files
« on: July 05, 2013, 05:28:22 PM »
I am very strict regarding to tagging in my music collection, and MusicBee has fulfilled my obsessions better than any other program I’ve tried. However, when it comes to a portable player, this is not the case: I’m using a Rockbox device (iPod classic) and it does not support many tags important to me, namely, the Setsubtite (or disc subtitle), the grouping, and the Origyear (origdate).

Consider this album http://www.discogs.com/Smashing-Pumpkins-Mellon-Collie-And-The-Infinite-Sadness/release/367739 My tags for track 1-02 are,

TITLE: Tonight, Tonight
ALBUM: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
SETSUBTITLE: Dawn to Dusk
Track: 2 of 14
Disc: 1 of 2

As Rockbox can’t read the setsubtitle tag, I would like an option to format the album tag to something like <Album>$IsNull(<Set Subtitle>,,[<Disc#>"]: "<Set Subtitle>) so it can be read “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness [2]: Dawn to Dusk”

This would be useful also in the case of grouping. For example, Der Ring des Nibelungen  http://www.discogs.com/Richard-Wagner-G%C3%BCnther-Neuhold-Badische-Staatskapelle-Der-Ring-Des-Nibelungen/release/1981256 is divided in scenes, each of them being a grouping, so the tags for the 1-02 track in this case are

COMPOSER: Richard Wagner
ALBUM: Der Ring des Nibelungen
TITLE: Weia! Waga! Woge, Du Welle
GROUPING: Erste Szene

I’d like to format the title tag with $IsNull(<Grouping>,,<Disc#>": ")<Title> to be “Erste Szene: Weia! Waga! Woge, Du Welle” and the track 1-03 to be “Erste Szene: Hehe! Ihr Nicker!” and so on…

Also, to keep accurate info for my ripped cds, I tag them (via MusicBrainz Picard) with the information of its exact release, so, sometimes, for example for the Nevermind 20th anniversary edition www.discogs.com/Nirvana-Nevermind/release/3132592 the year is 2011 and the origyear in 1991. This is fine because MusicBrains show me both of them, but I don’t want Rockbox telling me that Nevermind is from 2011.

Well, those are my main concerns, maybe someone else had others of the sort.

Hello! First of all: Thank you for this software. It is amazing and it has been my default media player since I discover it. I have a suggestion tho. (And sorry for my english).

I use XBMC in my HTPC, and I LOVE that you can see a picture of the physical disc when playing a song. The picture sould be named "cdart.png" and has to be in the same folder than the file being played. You can see an example here (image founded in google): http://blog.r-w-x.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/cdart-xbmc.png and the site http://fanart.tv/ has a very decent amount of them ready for download and has a API (in case you consider add automatic download) in http://fanart.tv/api-docs/music-api/ But I will be very happy to see support just for showing the image, for example, by making click on an icon below the artwork or have the option to see it in the player or in the playing now pannel.

I spent so much time adding a cdart.png to almost every album in my collection, and I will be very happy if this feature is added to MusicBee. Thank you again.
