I cannot reproduce the issue except if what you did was ticked the "origin" checkbox and the value was blank. If that's what you did its not a bug.

I understood how the error occurs.
When you insert data into the origin tag the flag selects itself and remains so until you remove the selection manually.
So when you make multiple changes to other tags, the entire "origin" tags of the selected fields is deleted.
Unless you remember to go to uncheck.

Bug Reports / Mb loses references to the main song in ASX files
« on: January 05, 2024, 04:31:34 PM »
I have created some collection albums using asx files.
When editing a tag, when you select multiple songs to edit at once, mb erases all references to the main song.
Basically delete this: <ref href="" />.
While everything else seems to remain in place.
I'm using version: 3.6.8758

Questions / File asx
« on: January 03, 2024, 09:11:05 AM »
I created an album of songs of which half of the songs were already present in the library.
To avoid having duplicates I created some asx files inserted in the album folder among the mp3 ones.
Everything OK. The song is performed from the actual one in mp3 but...
The <param name = "Custom 1" value = "exemple" /> command is not read. I also tried to put the name, subtitle aulbum, that I gave to that custom but nothing.
For the duration of the song you need to take the minutes, multiply by 60 and add the seconds. The obtained value must be inserted into <param name = "Length" value = "244000" /> and is found to be 4 minutes and 04 seconds.
It all becomes very difficult and time consuming to do.
It would be nice if starting from a song there was a command like: Create asx file. With the possibility of directly inserting new tags to identify another album.

My intent was to have software that was not exclusively a cataloger of songs but contained other information that could be quickly consulted.
It's true with one click you can access a variety of information on different sites. I myself have inserted automatic calls to pages of Last FM or DiscoGs and others in the internet preferences.
It's like this today but in the future? This information, which is so easy to find today, could become subject to charges.
When was Elvis Presley born? €5 or $5 whenever you want to know.
Extreme example but...
Not only!!! In Italy (the third technological world) not everyone can enjoy the internet. For example, I go online with a cellular SIM in a router that brings me 30Mb of speed, not always, sometimes it doesn't work at all.
It's disappointing to search for something online and see the No Internet Connection message.
So having an internal property database I don't find it to be a bad idea.
In any case I take note of the will of the people.

You could enter the data manually or with a button download the data from the network.
What data exactly, and with what 'button'?
I wonder if you're making fun of me.
I hope it's the translator's fault!!!!

What data? Tags?
Name of the artist, Alias, Date of birth, date of death, age (which the program could easily calculate), nationality, a link to the site, if it is a group, a single singer and finally a field to insert the complete biography. Possibly a simple table to insert the discography.
The button? Do you want me to write you the source in machine language?

Same as you, I am only sharing my opinion.
I still don't see (m)any users putting in the effort to manually populate all sorts of artist related tags for the artists in their libraries.
And for that reason I don't think it is worth the time and effort of the developer to try and implement something like this.
What tags are there in the program that refer to the artist?
There is currently only one container, not even a tag, that contains the entire text of the bio.
If they are present they will be hidden!!!!
It is clear that no one tries to populate tags that do not exist.

Also I find the wish a bit vague and general.
Maybe if you would be able to propose something that is more clear and specific, and what would be easier to use I could change my mind.
Do you want it to be precise?
Does this image taken from helium clarify your ideas?

This uses the manual system and the automatic system. See the download button?
If helium wasn't slow and complicated tag management it wouldn't be bad for the idea itself.

I can't be clearer than that. Unfortunately, by using a translator you cannot be sure that everything will be understood.

"Also I find the wish a bit vague and general"
For example, this sentence, translated, has no meaning for me.

Imagine an artist panel with an image of the artist at the top right and to the side and below all the data including the discography in which the owned discs are highlighted and can be recalled with a click.
There are already several ways to select an artist and then see what albums and tracks of him you have in your library.
Including having their pictures displayed.

But more importantly, here is a practical question:
How would you populate all the tags that you are suggesting that are important to link to an artist?
Manually? How many artists exist in your library?
And how many tags would you setup for artists?
Would you really be entering all of them for all your artists?

Of course I would use them.
Can the mixed system exist?
You could enter the data manually or with a button download the data from the network.
In any case, keep in mind that I am Italian and MB always finds biographies exclusively in English and therefore I find myself forced to find the biography in my language for each artist and paste it in the specific field.
Hard work but I'm doing it, calmly, but I'm doing it.
Among other things, MB often cannot find a biography for Italian singers due to spelling errors in the name. For example: Loredana Bertè (this is how it is written exactly) on iTunes it is written Loredanda Berte' and in the music explorer it does not exist under any circumstances, unless you write the name incorrectly.
It seems clear to me from the way biography is treated now that few people want to use it.
It would be enough for the programmer to add some fields related to the artist, not the music file.
Then the user could enter them in the info panel.
Of course it is a very long insertion job but it's easy to say that no one would do it and it doesn't mean that it has to be done in a short time. It's not like you're paid to do it. Collecting music is a hobby and the more data you can put in the more you increase the value for you who do it.
There are people who buy a smart TV but don't even have internet, indeed they believe that all the apps it contains are useless, precisely because they don't want to use them. Should we listen to these people?
Sorry but it's already difficult to express yourself through an AI translator, if someone then opposes an idea, it will never go forward.
I apologize for being long-winded

Optimal!! It seems to work fine now.
I'll do more tests.
Thank you all and a happy new year.

Good luck hope it works.
Works!!! But he has a problem!!
If the song is the first in the album, the cover is not displayed for all the other songs, in practice the album remains without cover.
Remains "no cover art"
Obviously it doesn't have a reference to the cover and since MB only refers to the first song for the cover, if that isn't there then nothing.
If there was a way to load a path to the cover with a paremeter.

You understand that we can group and categorize songs because each song is an individual file that can be tagged, right?

So what mechanism do you propose we use to group and categorize artists?

The way to do this is to put a custom tag or customs tags for each thing you want to track about an artist in each song file by that artist.  But this is not workable because each song could have multiple artists appearing on it from different countries with different attributes.

There is no file structure for individual artists like there is for individual songs, so this would require a separate database or something which would explode exponentially considering each song can have multiple artists attached to it.

I do not see how this is workable.  Please explain how you think it would work and how it could be accomplished.

I hope I'm clear I'm using google translate.
There is a system. In theory but I also think in practice it can be done with a relational database. When you start a song, which is stored in the library (a database after all), the software takes charge of the selected artist and searches for it in the artist database and once found it will display it in the appropriate form (panel).
Now you no longer need each mp3 file to have an internal biography.
I believe MB currently does the same thing. In fact, when you choose a song, the text that was stored appears in the "artist biography" panel, so that text is already saved in a database.
But everything happens with just one field.
This would involve adding a certain number of fields (Tags) referring to the artist.
A database is just a text file with search references and therefore would not even take up too much disk space.
Imagine an artist panel with an image of the artist at the top right and to the side and below all the data including the discography in which the owned discs are highlighted and can be recalled with a click.I have the impression that few people use the artist's biography precisely because it has no appeal, as it is currently developed.
Briefly: if a tag database was created for mp3s, I don't see why a similar database couldn't be created for artists.

It seems like that's exactly what I was looking for.
I really thank you so much.
I had done research, but perhaps due to my lack of knowledge of the English language I hadn't found anything.
A happy new year to you

If it is possible, I'd like to be able to organize artists in much the same ways as I do songs and albums. I'd like to be able to assign tags, groups, etc. to them.

I would also appreciate Finnish language support as well. :)

+1
I have made many requests in this sense but apparently it is not clear.
Manage artists as you manage songs with separate tags, not a simple and unique biography.
For example:
Artist Name, Alias, Date of birth, date of death, age (which the program could easily calculate), nationality, a link to the site, if it is a group, a single singer and finally a field to insert the complete biography . Possibly a simple table to insert the discography.
In this way the artists could be grouped by nationality or age or something else.

MusicBee Wishlist / Same song in multiple albums
« on: December 27, 2023, 03:27:18 PM »
An idea popped into my head, I don't know if it's easy to implement but I ask...
It often happens that a song appears in several compilations or anthologies of the artist.
There are songs that appear in the artist's first album and in several of his anthologies and also in collections by various artists.
It would be nice if music bee had multi position, like it does for multi artist.
In the end you would have a single file which however appears in different positions, how many bytes would you save?

Where do I disable the automatic features for artist and bio images?
I didn't find it!!!
In any case, I didn't say to eliminate the service but to make it manual, perhaps with a button or a pop-up menu with the right mouse button.
You actually did say "Wouldn't it be more convenient to eliminate all the automation?" and "My request: can't all the automatic systems be removed?". It sounds like you've already discovered the manual method both of bios and images, so you know it's already been made manual to some extent.

If your request had been simply to make manual management more robust, I wouldn't have objected.  When you start talking about removing automation for everyone because iTunes misspelled an artist's name, then yes I do have a problem with that.

If you want to disable these, you don't put the images in your layouts or look at the biographies or discographies if they're not useful to you.  Disabled.  I don't think I've ever looked at an artist biography on purpose in MB in the years I've been using it, so it's essentially disabled for me.  I do have artist images in my layout.  They are sometimes (horror) incorrect.  If I notice it, I block the image from being displayed again.  Sometimes the incorrect image is amusing to me so I leave it and get a chuckle whenever it comes up. Nothing in this world is perfect, and these automations are useful about 99 times for every time they are not.

If space is an issue, you can even get fancy and write a batch file to clear the bio and image folders and run it in Task Scheduler periodically.

I hope your answer was mistranslated by the translator.
Are you telling me not to use a service in the program because you know it doesn't work?
However, I did not peremptorily ask to eliminate the service but only the automation.
And I also wrote: And maybe insert a button, a menu that by clicking on it manually downloads the biography, as happens with covers. So I didn't say to remove it completely.
Maybe the translation of what I write is not correct?
Let's see if it goes better. We remove the automations and make them manual, so that if you don't like an image you can leave it blank. "Artist image not present"
You write to me: The user can quite easily turn off features they don't want and/or ignore retrieved data that doesn't meet their needs. There's no reason to remove these features making them available to no one.
Then you write to me: I don't think I've ever looked at an artist biography on purpose in MB in the years I've been using it, so it's essentially disabled for me.
So you've never used the artist biography and images?
Don't you know that the artist's image cannot be empty?
You can block the image you don't like but it is replaced by another that may be worse. You can do this 5 times the last one is whatever remains.
If there is this opportunity, why not make the most of it?
At this point I understand why no one uses the image and biographical part of the artist.

Greetings

My request: can't all the automatic systems be removed?
-1.  No.  I think most of what's done by MB automatically is quite popular despite the occasional incorrect image or lyric.

The user can quite easily turn off features they don't want and/or ignore retrieved data that doesn't meet their needs.  There's no reason to remove these features making them available to no one.

Thanks for the reply

Automations are useful but not default.
An example: Loradana Bertè in music explorer does not exist because on iTunes they write Loredana Berte' which is incorrect but in this way I, who spell the name correctly, cannot see the biography or the discography, even though I have inserted a correct biography in the panel.
In conclusion, I'll generally leave aside the biographies: MB is an excellent program for managing music files but absolutely not for the biographies of the artists of the songs. Proof of this is that when you edit a bio and forget to save it, there is no warning to remind you to save it.
