Is there a way to filter a collection for files with identical filenames but different extensions? I would like to easily find files that have been converted between formats where only the extension differs. A variation of a find duplicate tool. I'm not seeing quite how to do that either. I've looked at the MB wiki for "duplicates" but it says ask here.

Questions / Re: Sony .dvf format

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think it was too likely, but worth asking.

Thanks too for the conversion suggestions. What little I've found on the format suggests it uses a proprietary variant of FLAC, which I suppose implies it is lossless. I know it supports some tags to some extent.

The current version of Sony's Sound Organizer software can play dvf, but only files created after somewhere around 2012. For older files, I need to use the program that preceded Sound Organizer, "Digital Voice Editor," which does not run on Windows 10, possibly nothing newer than Windows 7. As it turns out, my local network is running on a Windows 7 machine, with Digital Voice Editor installed, and that opens the files that the newer one does not, and can convert them in batches to mp3 or wav.

Another reason to keep my Windows 7 machine chugging away.

Questions / Sony .dvf format

Is MusicBee able to work with the Sony dvf audio format? This was a proprietary compressed format Song it used to use with its digital voice recorders.

I have a large number of these, scattered across various backup and archive media. I still have the Sony program that can play these, and also can convert them to wav and mp3. But I first need to sort and weed through them, and try to get a definitive set without the many dupes that exist. MB would be helpful in this.

Questions / Display fields, column widths, horizontal scroll ... ?
« on: April 14, 2022, 02:57:23 AM »
I find myself repeatedly having to either add or remove fields from the main panel. I want a different mix, depending on the view and what I'm doing, likewise column widths. Changes to fields and widths made in one view seem to get propagated to other views, but it's not clear when and how. It feels like I'm doing a lot more messing with this than should be necessary.

Probably related, how independent are the different tabs? Like, which changes in one are also made in others? What determines that?

Also, does the backward/forward navigation in the tab apply only within that tab. It seems like each tab has its own history. But it's hard to be sure.

Also, I find that the horizontal scroll bar sometimes disappears, or is it that it only appears in some views, under some circumstances?

The common thread here is the difference between local and global effects. Whether or not a panel's open/close status carries over from one node to another is another source of some confusion.  ???

Bulk Renaming Utility looks like a deep one! And can edit other attributes like timestamps.

Thanks for the link.

Exactly like that! Thank you!

Music Bee. Yay!   :-*

Tips and Tricks / A file renaming tip: Renamer

Using MusicBee to reorganize by library, this little file renaming tool has been very useful. Not sure if MB is able to do all that this does, though probably some.

I've actually had this in my context menu SentTo folder and use it all the time. Literally!

(not at all associated with this app or its developer, just something I'm glad I stumbled on)

Questions / Copying a tag set from one file to another
« on: April 13, 2022, 05:21:56 AM »
Is it possible to copy a set of tags from one file to another? Here's what I want to do.

I have recordings of 40 Bach partitas by two different artists, Tureck and Gould. I would like the sequential <titles> of each track to be the same for both albums, based on what's currently used for one or the other of them. There must be a way to do this!

Can I copy a list of a specific tag from one set of files, and paste them into another list of files, according to track number?

I'm sure others have wanted to do this. I'm not quite finding how. I'm sure it's simple.

Questions / Re: Replacing a portion of filename with a tag
« on: April 12, 2022, 11:38:42 PM »
I just realized, the File Organizer process I ran didn't actually change just a portion of the file name, although that's what it seemed to do.

What it actually did was, it replaced the full name with a tags+punctuation template, some of whose output happened to be identical to a portion of the original name, which made it look like just a partial change (which in the end amounts to the same thing.)

Thank you! That did the rename, but it also moved the files, which I didn't want. (I was able to recover.)

The File Organizer seems to insist on moving files to the "to folder" even when the box is unchecked - or is it that the box gets re-checked by default every time the FO window opens, and I only just noticed that? Other settings seem to be retained, at least sometimes.

When I uncheck the box, the preview in the "new file name" col disappears, as though there has to be specified path. But, if it sees the selected file, it must also see its path, and if I want to keep newly named file it in the same path, then unchecking the "to folder" box should be enough, or so I would think....? There's something I'm not getting here....

Also, where are the presets for the File Organizer saved? And are they only saved after the settings have been run once? [Edit: Yes I see that's it.)

Thanks again.

Questions / Replacing a portion of filename with a tag
« on: April 12, 2022, 08:21:30 PM »
I am trying to figure out how, and which tool to use, to batch replace a portion of a filename with the "artist" tag. So for example:

06 Various Artists - Sunshine Superman.flac

06 Donovan - Sunshine Superman.flac

When "Donovan" is already in the the artist tag.

I've got the MusicBee plugin "" installed and have used it for various things already. But for some reason I'm not seeing which of that plugin's tools or which of the native MB tools will let me do this.

Thank you.

Bug Reports / Re: Files being saved?
« on: April 11, 2022, 04:06:35 AM »
An old thread, but I am experiencing the exact thing. I found this thread when I searched for {"files are still being saved" musicbee} I see it's been viewed 1500 times, so I thought it would be ok to revive it. I hope that's ok. Running MB 3.4.8033 P

I had recently done a series of tag updates on several hundred file sets in succession. These didn't seem to take very long to do, just a few seconds, and they the process seems to have completed.

But the green overlay in the MN taskbar icon doesn't make any progress. Process Hacker doesn't show any unusual activity by MB. Here's what the message looks like. (Sorry it is so large here!! It doesn't look like that in my screen cap app or at imgur. Anyone know why?)

When I shut down anyway, it shuts down normally, no need to terminate process. When I run it again, it starts normally. When I do a "scan folders for new files" (even though there are none) it takes a few seconds, as usual (over wifi to a networked desktop), seems to do something like a scan verification, and that's that.

Anyway. Really liking MB.

Questions / Re: Keeping timestamp when editing tags
« on: April 09, 2022, 06:08:03 PM »
Thank you for those replies. (I thought I had replied last night to the first reply, but it doesn't seem to be there.)

This is a most useful option. I can see how it can impact syncing as phred points out, and I'll keep that in mind.

Right now, I'm doing my first real systematic tagging, sorting, and reorganization of a huge collection of files, and being able to retain a stable "acquisition/creation" date across multiple tag edits, without everything ending up with "todays" date, is really important. Very impressed so far with how MusicBee is letting me do this. I've downloaded the Additional Tagging & Reporting Tools plugin. Up to now  I'd been using Winamp and Mp3tag. Like night and day!

Questions / Keeping timestamp when editing tags
« on: April 09, 2022, 05:49:26 AM »
Is it possible to retain the timestamp of a file when updating its tags?

I'm not asking about keeping the date that the item was added to the library, but the actual "last modified" time of the file (even though, by changing the tag, I am in fact "modifying" it.) This last modified stamp is the time that I first acquired or created the file, which is more important to me than the time that I may have modified its tags or other meta data.

Questions / Re: Setting default paths
« on: April 06, 2022, 04:56:27 AM »
Yes that is an option, and I have done that. For some purposes, working with a file dialog may be preferable. The behavior of this dialog was somewhat unexpected, and it seemed like it might be by design. I was wondering if there was a place in settings where paths can be specified. That might account for the unexpected behavior (based on how Windows dialogs typically work.) I thought maybe it was a setting, given how customizable MusicBee seems to be.
