Questions / Re: Context menu
« on: June 02, 2022, 11:39:42 PM »
Actually, I spoke too soon....  :'(

The MB options are STILL on the context menu, but their appearance alternates with similar options for WMP, depending on which file type I right click.

MP3s get options for WMP.
M4A and WAV files get 3 context options for MB.
But ALL of these file types, when clicked, open in MB.

I've got a couple of Context Menu editors/removers hanging around. None of them are finding this.

Ok what it seemed to take was not just a reboot, then running as admin and changing those settings immediately upon reboot, then immediately rebooting again. Well, at least that's what I just did.

Now, those two options, which were at the top of the context menu when audio files were right clicked, have been replaced with a couple of Windows Media Player options, which are still clutter that I never use, but at least they don't have predefined accelerator keys that hijack my ability to use those keys for other items.

Thanks again!

Thanks phred for that quick reply! :)

I should have mentioned that I have that option turned off. To change it, I need to run MB as an administrator. When I do that, and turn the option on, then exit, then run it again as admin, turn the option off, and exit, the options are still on the context menu. I've even rebooted. I've been through this sequence a few time now over the last few weeks, always with the same results.

Questions / Another playlist question
« on: June 02, 2022, 10:52:59 PM »
There is something about playlists that I am just not getting.

Right clicking on a playlist, I can choose playlist settings and set that list to either use the default or custom fields. As it seems to work, with custom fields, the list's column arrangement is fixed for that list and do not change when column settings for other lists or nodes are changed. But when I duplicate that list, the duped version reverts to the default, which doesn't really seem like "duplication." That might not be a problem, but I'm unable to locate any way to either set the "default" that's being used, or to copy the settings from one list to another. So I end up constantly having to set and sometimes reset the same column  configuration. I'm pretty sure this is not the way it's supposed to work, but I can't figure out what I am either doing wrong, or what it is I am not understanding (which amount to the same things.)

This is related to to a question I asked about a week ago that never got a reply. There too, it seems like what I'm trying to do would be very common and easy to do and a basic function of the program.

I've looked in the wiki and have searched the forum for both of these things, but somehow I'm not finding what seems like should be really basic info.

So I'm really hoping someone can shed some light on this.

Thanks for reminding me of the file reorganization options. I had used it early on but not recently.

Questions / Context menu
« on: June 02, 2022, 10:20:08 PM »
I would like to remove from the Windows Explorer context menu the MB options to  "Queue Next in MusicBee" and "Queue Last in MusicBee." These are not options that I use, and their shortcut keys (N and L, respectively) interfere with other context menu items that I use all the time.

I don't see any option in MB for either adding or removing these. And I can't find the displayed text when looking in the registry.

I have MB set as the default for opening audio files, and don't want to undo that - just remove those two options from my already cluttered context menu.

Can this be done?

Questions / Playlists and renamed files
« on: June 02, 2022, 12:26:34 AM »
I have files that I would like to rename in bulk but that are already in playlists under their old filename. I know that I can rename a single file via the tag editor, and that MB will update the library and the playlists won't be broken. But I don't see any way to do this for multiple files.

What would be great is if MB could send items to Bulk Rename utility and update all successful renames. But until then, is there any way to rename outside of MB and not break playlists?

Using this patched version and then turning off global for the media hotkeys causes the media keys to not be responsive anymore. No program, including MusicBee, respond to media keys after disabling the global option of the media hotkeys in MusicBee. It seems like MusicBee blocks the media keys from being read by other programs. Even though it is not in focus.

The only way I was able to get MB to not respond to a play/pause media key was to delete all key assignments from the Multimedia: Play/Pause action. That was after unticking the global option.

I'll mention again, after MB responded to an out of focus play/pause media key, all subsequent presses of the key caused MB to stop and then immediately start again. I had to return focus to MB and stop with Ctrl+s (not sure if that's a default or my own.)

Turning them off this way is not a great loss to me as I tend not to use media keys, because I use regular function keys all the time, in different apps, plus with AHK, and their function can change depending on the state of the Fn mod key, and I would rather they do nothing when I accidentally misfire, which is easy to do because different keyboards map mediakey functions to different function keys.  ???

Thanks for this great program! So happy and even relieved to be able to use it, even with the quibbles!  :)

Mod date: August 30, 2018, 12:24:44 pm.

That's for MB 3.5.8150.

Is that a prerelease? I see the download page is still offering MusicBee 3.4.8033.

I find the same or very similar happening, and I am using a portable install of MB 3.5.8150 P.

I have removed the "global" option from all key assignments that come up when I type "media" into the Hotkeys search box.
When MB does not have the focus, if the F3 (Play/Pause media) key is pressed, MB starts playing, and if I press it again, MB stops but then immediately resumes playing, as though it is processing both a stop and a start command. The only way to get out of this loop is to focus MB and then use the regular Ctrl+S to stop playback. Pressing F3/media key in MB will stop and then immediately resume playback.

This is annoying because I use F3 all the time in various apps for "Find Next," and if the Fn mod key on my keyboard is not enabled (which can happen easily via a "typo" since it is located next to the Ctrl and Win key), MB starts playing when I try to do a search.

Any ideas? Is it possible that it is Windows that is passing the MediaKey to MB, and that MB is just responding to a Windows command independent of its own settings? I'm using a Surface Pro, with hardware keyboard attached.

Questions / Columns in search results
« on: May 26, 2022, 01:52:48 AM »
Is there any way to set things so that the columns in search results match the columns of the node being searched from?

Would be nice to save and load preset column settings. Playlists seem to be able to have their own column settings, which is related. But is there any way to apply one set of column settings to another node?

I still find myself adding and re-adding and resizing columns more than it seems should be necessary.

Have you read the start post? I think it explains pretty well how to find any specific element. (using a colour picker)

You are right - it does explain it pretty well! I breezed right past it in my rush to plunge in.  :-[  I've now found the elements I'm looking for.

Thanks again for preparing this demo!

Questions / Re: Convert format, preserve timestamp

I don't need to work with tags in Explorer. I just use it as a vanilla portal into the file properties.

Nor do I really want to become fluent or even semi fluent in id3. :) Just enough to use some number of custom tags, and to know when  I go from using MB to manage the vanilla and generic and non-custom tags, to using MB's more proprietary features. Not that I don't want to use them. I just want a better handle on what I'm actually doing.

What I think I'm taking away from this is, hijacking a standard tag and letting MB manage the alias while inside MB, keeps the file and its meta in the vanilla realm, and the aliased values will still be accessible by their native tag name when the file read other than by MB.

Mp3tag recognizes the Copyright tag, and shows the values I've given its alias in MB. But when I edit the tag in Mp3tag and save it (and can see that it's been saved by the updated mod date, which MB is set to not do), and I then look at the tag in MB, the edit isn't picked up. Even after rescanning the folder. That surprises me. I can see the Mp3tag edit in Explorer. Interesting.

Skins / Re: Sample Skin

Thanks for this! I like this skin pretty much as it is. I am playing with a second portable install of MB, and wanted something I couldn't possibly mistake for my regular one. It serves its purpose well, and keeps the different MB zones visible, but without being distracting or compromising usability or imposing a strong style or aesthetic. Colorfully zen.

The one thing I'd like to change, I can't figure out from looking at the xml. In the main view, I would like the text color to be the same on all lines. and not alternate every line, though the alternation of the bg is perfect. Unless - it only looks like alternating text color because of the different backgrounds? (I don't think it's that, but it seems possible.)

I've looked around the xml, and I can see how I could modify it, but I haven't identified which value to mod. I 've searched for "text" and "color" and even "font" and have made a number of fun changes! But not the one I want. So I thought I'd ask. It's in there somewhere, isn't it?

Thank you again.

I'd rather not hijack Copyright or any other existing link for a custom link. Not sure what made me think that was the way to do it.

But I notice that when I look at the file's properties in Explorer, under details, I can see the Copyright tag, and its content shows the value for OriginalModDate.

But when I used Define New Tags and created a tag called OriginalModDate2, it seemed to work in MB just like the hijacked one, but it doesn't show up when I look at the file properties in Explorer. Is that a limitation of how Explorer presents the properties? Or is one tag less "official" or standard than the others?

It's not clear where "standard" tag functions leave off, and where MB features take over. For example, both my original hijacked tag and the one I made from scratch are listed as custom tags, numbers 1 and 2, respectively.

There's something I'm still not getting about this........

PS. I know that none of this will let me actually update the file's mod time. But having a record of it that travels with the file is sufficient. And I'm thinking that somehow, if I have that info in an accessible tag, I'll eventually be able to turn up some method of transferring it to the mod time if if seems necessary.
