Questions / Convert format, preserve timestamp
« on: April 16, 2022, 10:46:45 PM »
Is it possible somehow to do a batch format conversion while preserving the timestamp of the source? That seems like it might be an option, but I'm not seeing it in the file conversion dialog.

Any way to indirectly go about it? E.g., by first copying the current modified date to a tag, then (assuming tags are preserved in the converted file), copying the tag back to a modified value? Something like that?

The filenames almost all have a some kind of timestamp, but those are not consistent enough in either their format or their position in the name string, to be able to use them in a straightforward way.

Questions / Different libraries with different settings?
« on: April 16, 2022, 03:20:28 AM »
I created a new library to work with audio files that are not part of my main music collection. This worked well, but a couple of things were unexpected.

The main library had some filters that I created for subsets of the whole library, with specific search criteria. These appeared as folder items under Music at the top of the navigation panel. When I created the new library, those same filters were there, even though they'd be meaningless to the new file set. The playlists from the main library were not in the new library, nor were (I don't think) the paths in the Scan Folders For New Files dialog, as I wouldn't expect them to be in a new library. But the filters were retained. I deleted them, because, why not?  :-\

Later when I reopened the main library, the filters were gone there too. Which I also didn't expect, but maybe I should have...? It's not clear how it works, or why it would work as it apparently does.  :-\

I also found that changes I had made to the displayed fields of the new library's Music node that were specific to its purpose were propagated to the main library. I really didn't expect that one!

I would have thought libraries would be separate from each other, or could be made more or less that way. But I'm not finding options related to this, or enlightenment in the wiki.

What is it I'm missing?

Is there a way to filter a collection for files with identical filenames but different extensions? I would like to easily find files that have been converted between formats where only the extension differs. A variation of a find duplicate tool. I'm not seeing quite how to do that either. I've looked at the MB wiki for "duplicates" but it says ask here.

Questions / Sony .dvf format
« on: April 15, 2022, 12:49:23 AM »
Is MusicBee able to work with the Sony dvf audio format? This was a proprietary compressed format Song it used to use with its digital voice recorders.

I have a large number of these, scattered across various backup and archive media. I still have the Sony program that can play these, and also can convert them to wav and mp3. But I first need to sort and weed through them, and try to get a definitive set without the many dupes that exist. MB would be helpful in this.

Questions / Display fields, column widths, horizontal scroll ... ?
« on: April 14, 2022, 02:57:23 AM »
I find myself repeatedly having to either add or remove fields from the main panel. I want a different mix, depending on the view and what I'm doing, likewise column widths. Changes to fields and widths made in one view seem to get propagated to other views, but it's not clear when and how. It feels like I'm doing a lot more messing with this than should be necessary.

Probably related, how independent are the different tabs? Like, which changes in one are also made in others? What determines that?

Also, does the backward/forward navigation in the tab apply only within that tab. It seems like each tab has its own history. But it's hard to be sure.

Also, I find that the horizontal scroll bar sometimes disappears, or is it that it only appears in some views, under some circumstances?

The common thread here is the difference between local and global effects. Whether or not a panel's open/close status carries over from one node to another is another source of some confusion.  ???

Tips and Tricks / A file renaming tip: Renamer
« on: April 13, 2022, 05:34:22 AM »
Using MusicBee to reorganize by library, this little file renaming tool has been very useful. Not sure if MB is able to do all that this does, though probably some.

I've actually had this in my context menu SentTo folder and use it all the time. Literally!

(not at all associated with this app or its developer, just something I'm glad I stumbled on)

Questions / Copying a tag set from one file to another
« on: April 13, 2022, 05:21:56 AM »
Is it possible to copy a set of tags from one file to another? Here's what I want to do.

I have recordings of 40 Bach partitas by two different artists, Tureck and Gould. I would like the sequential <titles> of each track to be the same for both albums, based on what's currently used for one or the other of them. There must be a way to do this!

Can I copy a list of a specific tag from one set of files, and paste them into another list of files, according to track number?

I'm sure others have wanted to do this. I'm not quite finding how. I'm sure it's simple.

Questions / Replacing a portion of filename with a tag
« on: April 12, 2022, 08:21:30 PM »
I am trying to figure out how, and which tool to use, to batch replace a portion of a filename with the "artist" tag. So for example:

06 Various Artists - Sunshine Superman.flac

06 Donovan - Sunshine Superman.flac

When "Donovan" is already in the the artist tag.

I've got the MusicBee plugin "" installed and have used it for various things already. But for some reason I'm not seeing which of that plugin's tools or which of the native MB tools will let me do this.

Thank you.

Questions / Keeping timestamp when editing tags
« on: April 09, 2022, 05:49:26 AM »
Is it possible to retain the timestamp of a file when updating its tags?

I'm not asking about keeping the date that the item was added to the library, but the actual "last modified" time of the file (even though, by changing the tag, I am in fact "modifying" it.) This last modified stamp is the time that I first acquired or created the file, which is more important to me than the time that I may have modified its tags or other meta data.

Questions / Setting default paths
« on: April 05, 2022, 11:23:06 PM »
Hi. New to MusicBee, giving it a try as I reluctantly wean myself from Winamp 5.8, despite the perpetual imminence of its reincarnation under new management.

I am importing playlists via File > Playlists > Import Playlists. And every time, I need to navigate to the location I want, as it always defaults to C:\Users\MyName\Music -- a folder I NEVER use. Is it possible to set the default paths for certain dialogs, or to at least get it to behave like a typical file open dialog, where it retains the previous location? What's strange is, when the dialog first opens, it is actually changing to the location at C:\Users, as though it was set to switch to that from wherever it was.
